In order to consistently lay eggs, hens need about 16 hours of daylight and 8 hours of darkness when they're roosting. Once less than 12 hours of daylight is available, egg productions slows down considerably if not ceases completely.

For about a year now we’ve had to use a rope to open and close their coop door because their automatic door broke and we just never got around to installing a new one. So because of this they weren’t being let out in the morning until around 9:30 - 10 (I don’t wake up that late it’s just I don’t usually get out of bed until then )
:lazypotato:
they were laying an alright amount, but definitely not what their breeds should be producing. All of our hens should lay 4-5 eggs a week and we were only getting around 2 or 3 for each hen, which to some that may seem like a lot but we’d like to be able to completely pay for their food with the money we get from selling their eggs and it usually was never enough. Even one of our hens wasn’t laying altogether.
But we finally were able to install their automatic door which (slowly) closes and opens when it gets dark, and when it gets light outside.
And man have our hens been busy girls popping out eggs almost everyday since we installed the door. It’s a random thing to be excited about but they lay some very pretty eggs (greenish-blue and pink) so I like to marvel at the colorful egg’s in the cartons.

What do you do with all the eggs? Besides selling some?
My mom may cook some for her husband but I don’t really like eggs and she’s allergic so for the majority of them we sell.

Ahh okay, do many of them become chicks too? Or just edible ones?

If the egg is fertilized and there’s a broody hen (a hen that constantly keeps the egg warm for the majority of the time) then it can possibly develop into a chick but once the eggs are without a hen’s warmth they don’t have a chance to develop (unless it’s pretty warm outside), and we always collect ours everyday, then sell them a few days later so there’s no possibility for any of ours to become chicks.

Yeah the majority of our eggs could honestly probably be given to a broody hen or put into an incubator and as long as everything went alright we could get lot’s of chicks since every time I’ve checked if they were fertilized a big majority of them always are, but currently we’re waiting until next year for chicks.
