For a lot of Indian weddings, there's this game we play where we steal the groom's shoes and later exchange for money.

The mandup is where the actual ritual takes place and before you climb the steps, you have to take your shoes off. So as the bride and groom go to the mandup, they take their shoes off.
The bridal party (usually the unmarried girls and relatives of the bride) is then on a mission to steal the groom's shoes and the groom's side is there to protect his shoes.
The groom cannot leave without his shoes and it has to be the original shoes he wore.
If the shoes are successfully stolen, the bridal party then demands money in exchange for the shoes before the couple can leave the mandup.
This is to signify that the groom can also take care of the bride's family and we accept him into the family. There's no set amount so we can negotiate however much we want.

This game can get intense and it's soooo much fun. Last weekend we were part of the bride's side so we were tasked to steal the shoes and our side is big. My cousin's husband hasn't even met ALL of us yet. We're very competitive and have a military man on our side Plus, one of our cousin was an honorary groomsman so insider info.
Within 1 hour we got both shoes. For one shoe, myself and two cousins tackled the groomsmen. They thought they could get away with hiding it in a pocket.
The second, they hid in a tree. My cousin's son found that one. When time came, we managed to get 1000 USD for the shoes.

Next year one of my guy cousins is getting married so we'll be protecting the shoes. Good luck to the other side. They aint touching them.​

hands down one of my fave traditions it's genuinely so fun. last time i was at a wedding i was from the bride's side, and we attempted to steal the groom's shoes,,, we hid them behind a plant in front of the ladies' room! but his sisters caught us and returned the shoes to him :( and we didn't even get any money :(((

next time i go to a wedding i'll likely be from the groom's side so i'll extract my revenge and spy on the bride's side and catch them and make sure we don't pay them a single rupee

If you get an invite to a South Asian wedding >.> go. It's so much fun.
You know how when the bride and groom are at the alter, everyone is quiet and stays in their seat. This doesnt exist for Indian weddings.

When the wedding ceremony takes place, you don't have to stay seated. You can walk around and go to different areas. You're not being disrespectful or rude for doing so because during the ceremony, the families are involved in the ceremony so you have a bunch of people getting up to enter and leave the mandup constantly. It's also longer than tradition white gown weddings and pretty loud so feel free to talk.

Boquet toss, being a bridesmaid someday. In my country none of those traditions exist but I moved to Europe so I wont mind adding a lil western flavor to my own hypothetical wedding or being a friend's bridemaid. lol

so i have an idea for next time. Have one of the girls in the fam wear the shoes because we usually have those gigantic skirts. No one can see our feet. Whoever wears them tho can't move around.

we do this for Indian weddings too but there’s money for every event. The vidhi they get money, the pithi they get money, the wedding they get money, and the reception they get money. Sometime an extra prayer ceremony is added in where they get money.
One of the few times I need to carry around a load of cash. And it can only end with a single. So you can’t just give 50 bucks. It has to be 51 or 101 or 91

Nope. It’s normally money. But there is a part of one of the ceremony where we gifted a dress, jewelry, sweets, and dishes and stuff we use for prayer ceremonies. This is just from the family. Regular guests don’t do this and aren’t required to.
All other times was money. It does make it easier when you’re lost on what to gift.
the envelope for gifting money are really cute. These are just some of what I have. A lot of them are traditionally red because that’s the main color that symbolizes weddings. Nowadays they make them in all sorts of colors and designs. Kinda like our version of a red packet.
