I got this from akp, but what does everyone think of this? Is this cultural appropriation or are people moaning about nothing?

BLACKPINK under fire for alleged cultural appropriation

BLACKPINK are currently under fire for alleged cultural appropriation.

Some fans and netizens have taken issue with the members' behavior in a clip from the most recent episode of the girl group's 'BLACKPINK DIARIES'. Episode 7 of BLACKPINK's reality series follows the girls behind the scenes of their "Kill this Love" music video, and at one point, Jennieand Rose as well as Lisa and Jisoodance together.

According to some fans, the BLACKPINK members' dance moves refer to the classical Indian dance Bharatnatyam, and they called out Jennie in particular as they allege she's mimicked the dance on multiple occasions.

Netizens commented, "I suggest the BLINKS who don't know anything about the culture please know that it's wrong, and you don't have to say anything about it. Just don't defend anything because you'll make it worse, and it's not good for Jennie like at all," "I was quiet on this matter until now, but as an Indian, I'm highly offended. I learned Bharatnatyam as a kid, and it was taught to me that this dance is sacred to us and connects us to god. Mocking mudras is beyond limits now and is fuming me," and "She had done it a few times, and it's not okay. She needs to acknowledge what she did and why it's considered wrong."

What are your thoughts on the issue? Check out the dance some netizens are finding problematic at 10:00 in the video above.

Yeah, it'd be nice if westerners who believe in cultural appropriation would stop trying to make it a thing for Koreans.

A majority of my family is Indian and I can promise you they all couldn’t care less that a Korean girl is performing one of their dance moves.

Bruh I’m going to India in June I can ask them all myself and their reply is going to be: why does it matter?

I legit do this almost everyday at school because it's a running joke with my friends about my dance

so they can shove their hate where the sun don't shine
just because they are biased against jennie doesn't mean they can say this

I think people take these issues too seriously in general. I'm sure there wasn't attempt to mock any culture. Like i get some things are associated with religion and such so it's weird to see idols and others who aren't in that religion to use such things but i'm pretty sure if those moves are religious Jennie didn't know about it.

yea i think it's a way bigger thing for diasporic minorities trying to hold on to their culture in a western/different country. i find it weird that the bindhi is considered cultural appropriation by so many brown people when non-hindu brown people appropriated it first :sippinthetea: like try to tell my muslim auntis to stop wearing it because it's culturally insensitive. no one's gonna buy that...

As a fellow Indian, I agree with this so much. My family couldn't give two shits. Actually, I'm sure most of them would be happy seeing people wearing/performing things that's from our culture. They see at it as appreciation, if anything.

Omg I'm going to India in July LOL

@Ozymandias Are you offended? :taemsip:
LMAO first Jennie's bindi (And Dara some years ago) and now this.

Meh, Idk who's actually offended, I doubt any actual Indian fans are, and even if they are, we're a small af market and Kpop stans are few and far between so it doesn't matter. Most people would actually be happy foreigners are doing Indian stuff.

I remember when Selena Gomez released "Come and get it", people weren't offended at all :yolk:

Also you're visiting India in July? :nakypog:

I am not Indian, however my step-father is Indian and was born in Bomba but he came to the states in his 20s and met my mother. He has legally adopted me since the age of 9 after they married. Due to that his family has taken me and my mother in very well especially with previous visits to them and I agree, that is exactly how my grandparents and cousins would feel.

I think people view the world too negatively, appreciating someone’s culture is shamed and that’s not right.

I low key hate my country. But you’re going in July? That’s awesome! I’ll be there for about two weeks during my birthday to spend time with family.

Oof are you Punjabi coz that's the stereotype of Indian-Canadians lmao :yolk:
Anyway, Selena used that bindi look back then too I think, I never cared for the song but my drinking buddies used to play it sometimes and I heard it a lot of times lol.
And poor you, hope your stay isn't too painful :yolk:

One thing I would point out about your comment is you talk about knetz. From what I can tell this isn't a knetizen thing. On twitter at least it's almost exclusively an international fan concern, as it usually is whenever the topic of cultural appropriation in kpop comes up.
