I was thinking recently about how my name was at school vs what my legal name was and it's kind of crazy how the name my school used was quite different than my legal name. Legally I have a first name (spelled differently than usual) and a last name. According to my school I had a first name (same name but the common spelling), a middle name (I don't legally have a middle name in the US. Not in Russia either but I have a kind of one), and my last name, which was spelled correctly and everything. So 2/3 names weren't quite right and only 1 was spot on. That changed when I moved schools though, but for the first 11 years of my school life it was off :lisalaugh: And I know this was probably because of my parents filling out stuff that way. But its still weirdness

Try having people read your name as Alexis instead of Lexus because they obviously can't read :joyslay:

I use the pinyin spelling of my name so throughout school they'd always either pronounce it wrong or write it wrong
That’s kinda the romanized spelling right? I’m not familiar with Chinese languages and pinyin really. I can see how it would be easy ish to pronounce or spell wrong.

yeap like for example ning ning 's her stage name but her chinese name romanized would be ning yi zhuo
Are there specific syllables and whatnot used? I don’t really know how to explain it, like standardized syllables for pinyin based on the Chinese characters, though I don’t know anything about Chinese languages (except they’re hard) so maybe it doesn’t work quite like that. Given the English language it’s probably harder to sound things out too because when I compare English to Russian for example English has a lot more weird pronunciation differences and if you see a word you don’t necessarily know how it’s pronounced you know? I’ve actually thought about how hard it is to pronounce foreign words by looking at romanization and whether other languages would be better for that. Long side tangent, this was just something I thought about more recently and that’s why I’m bringing it up :dubuthink:

obviously there are the chinese characters but

Pinyin
/ˌpɪnˈjɪn/
noun
the standard system of romanized spelling for transliterating Chinese.

I guess I was more so asking if pinyin is sounded out and you use whatever Latin characters you deem correct or if for all the characters there’s a theoretical standard letter combo that’s used. But I guess it would be hard to have all the syllables standardized because I would think it wouldn’t be used as much as the characters. It’s hard to explain, my brain doesn’t like thinking all the way :lisalaugh:

sorta of but more in that it's chinese pronunciation...not merely the english pronouciation of certain words ...it's hard to describe with the written language lol

Do you mean that English pronunciations can be hard for pinyin because of language differences, so the pinyin might not fully encompass how to properly pronounce it in the Chinese language?

absolutely english is a really really hard langauge to learn (for chinese and non-chinese alike) since there are so many exceptions and whatnot

I'm teaching my son reading now so how do you explain to a 5 year old child

why for example - the "i" in ice cream is pronounced like "I" but the "i" in something like It or Is is more pronounced like "ee" (does that make sense?)

Yeah I definitely agree. English and pronunciation is hard. Not enough rules that aren’t broken half the time. The letters with two completely different sounds don’t help either (like c)

and then as my son so aptly taught me there are diaphragm words (ie. words that sound differently when paired up with another letter)
like for example - "ch" or "th"

but yeah english is hard and stupid - we should all learn the most commonly spoken language in the world - MANDARIN!!! lol
