I should clarify. Majoring in English in the states isn't about the language but focused on literature and applied writing. English majors can get into fields like publishing, journalism, copywriting.

It all depends what your interests are. English Major is an umbrella and under that umbrella are majors like literature, technical writing, creative writing, i mentioned journalism as well, and the language itself. As long as I have the skillset I can apply to any field under that umbrella.

I'm currently in a form of publishing. I work for a company that publishes pamphlets and books for local museums and exhibits. My city has a many museums so we're never out of work.

But if i wanted to quit and teach English as the language in Brazil or India, I could very much do so. I may need to take some extra steps like pass some sort of test but I can still do so.

Or if I wanted to switch and work at a magazine ill be starting at the bottom but I can do that as well.

You get to choose what your focus is without having to stick with one path. But it's a good suggestion to take a second major or minor if you're an English major. English degrees are not that coveted. It's like having mashed potatoes without seasoning.
