Truth be told, it's evolutionary. In psych class we got it put through our heads that often people take information that conflicts with their worldview as a physical threat and for most of us it's pretty mild as that evolutionary trait is no longer favorable and is declining. However! With strong beliefs like being obsessed with an idol or (*sigh*) politics, it can still be a pretty strong reaction.
