California passed a bill that will make teaching cursive mandatory in all public schools. This is a waste of student's time. They should be using that time for math, reading, comprehension, technology etc. BUT OMG I love the thought of students suffering like I did! And they need to teach the lie that if you don't write in cursive in high school and college they throw out your work so that they can then be mad when they find out it's exactly the opposite.

Honestly cursive is only useful when you're writing large blocks of writing by hand.

Personally now my "printing" handwriting is a mix of the two where the y's and g's (edit: oh and h's and n's transitioning to e's) and what have you have these massive hoops on the bottom like I was taught. It really lets the pen flow through the paper so you're focused on writing the word, not each letter.

Imho it's a dying utility but it is a useful skill to have.

also imho it should be an elective class, studying different handwritten and typed fonts and the utility as well as artistic value of these. I think cursive is useful because i do handwriting work to help me focus and then I type it right back up so it's effectively my personal preference and not something I found was required at all.

I think schools should focus on handwritten consistency and legibility, no matter if printed or cursive or blended like mine. (oh also cursive is really easy and sweet on those olden ink pens because they tend to want a "direction" but that's imo

Edit: for teaching cursive I think it's useful to show why the letters are the way they are and that ultimately cursive is really about using the least corners and pickups as possible

I don't think that this is a bad thing! As a senior in high school, you'd be surprised at how many people don't know how to write cursive. I feel like that's such a good skill to have as an adult. Maybe it's just me but I'm pretty sure your signatures have to be somewhat legible! But the worst thing is that they can't read cursive. At the very least, that should be something you should learn!

Apparently, in my state, my class (2024) was the first one to not be in a school system where cursive isn't required, and that caused a whole class of students and younger not to be able to read or write in cursive.

We touched on cursive briefly for maybe like a week because my 5th-grade English teacher thought it would be important. And I thank her for that. Cursive doesn't even really take that long to teach either. Just like spend a week or 2 on it and then most of the kids will be good. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I saw a joke on recently. If you wanted to disable an entire generation make everything in cursive and turn all the vehicles to manual transmissions.

no but I guess with all the shit going down in the world I've become indifferent (I became different a long time ago)
I don't wish suffering upon innocent people BUT that's not realistic and just naive so instead indifference
