Vocals vs. Song (1 Viewer)

I have been thinking about this question, ever since some people we're mentioning how this generation lacks good vocalists. I don't really agree with this, but it still made me wonder.

I like some vocal performances, but i feel like it really matters if the song is enjoyable, if it has the right melody, the verses fit with the chorus, the transitions arent too jarring but also not too boring or cliche. A good vocal performance is like the jewel on the crown for me, but i really like the song as a whole more.

Good songs matter more than good vocals. The way I see it good vocals make a song better too, so it kind of ties in. The aren’t the end all be all of good songs as well, there’s lots of aspects that make the song good

You can have the best vocal ever if it's a shit song it's a shit song. You need vocals that fit the songs, LSRF doesn't care about super strong vocals really, with NMIXX it's kinda essential, with Girls day it's even an identity

the 1st thing doesnt have to do anything with the 2nd though. being a good vocalist should be part of their job, but the business focuses more on other things now and idols cant sing live anymore.

Good song. If the song is shit no one even with perfect god sent vocals can make it good. it makes bad song into ok one but not good imo.

Ideally a good or even great voice should present a good or even great song. Having said that, there are quite a few vocalists in the Heavy Metal scene that can't sing in the conventional sense. But a charismatic voice and good songwriting can conceal such flaws.

'Good' vocals might be also a matter of taste.

YEah, there has been a lot of focus on electronic sounds and less high notes in the kpop formula throughout the years. Of course, it's incredible and impressive that singers can achieve this, but sometimes i feel like too much is focused on high notes, on vocal demonstrations than the song and lyrics.

i think saying idols can't sing live anymore is exactly true imo, plenty of them do. The thing is back in the day when they focused more on the vocal abilities of idols they had designated members for vocals, and dance and rap distintively. Now all the members have to sing super well live, they need to dance lot harder too, with stunts that could break your neck and never fail to sound clear on MR Removed videos where the netizens would shame them for being out of breath. Oh not even mentioning that idols need to know how to model, MC, dance, rap, act, write songs, and be on top of political situations too, or else they would be cancelled in a blink of an eye.

While i did enjoy the verse - chorus - verse - chorus - highnote - chorus template of before, it got too repetitive, and i can name a few groups that did this in almost every song. I'm glad they make songs that catter to more members, the dancers with dancebreaks, the rappers to have entire verses and so on and so forth.

Sometimes good vocals saves it, especially if they can concey the emotions well. But it is a pitty if they don't pay any mind to the makng of the song.

Yeah high notes are sometimes nice but definitely not necessary like some make it out to be. If vocalists are truly that bad, it’ll detract enough from the song that it won’t be good anymore usually. If it’s still enjoyable to listed to then the vocalists are probably doing just fine, if not better than just fine.

It doesn’t matter to me, as long as the song has fun/ good/ meaningful lyrics I could care less (I agree tho, having amazing vocalists does help a song imo)

I also love unique sounds, synths, hidden vocals, something that’s diverse (as an American music over here is sh!t😭 expect for Taylor Swift, she knows what’s she’s doing) (I also crave EDM like what Alan Walker makes, I still hope he collaborates with more Kpop groups (looking at you PS5)
