Oh man do i have to be serious about it? XD It's 8 am only

Okay, i personally think it's SUCCESS. And before anyone throws hands at me, by success i mean relevancy among kpop enjoyers (be it international or korean fans). For example the group Katchi had korean and caucasian members if i remember and was started by a korean woman, so was that one boy group started by a student as a program or uni study. Were they considered kpop? One could say yes, cause it was started from a korean person's initiation, and had 1 or 2 korean members, However it never sparked much interest and always were met with accusations of "try hardness" and etc.

While we have now a girl group made by jyp with also maybe 1 or 2 korean members only and other nationalities. Almost the same premise, but the difference is, it's by a well known company and ppl are certain it will create buzz.

The same way Black Swan wasnt on the kpop map mainly until they hit success with some of their songs.

Also the songs being mostly in english, japanese or korean is not smth to consider now. Kpop idols made all english songs even back in the 2000s , and released japanese releases even before. The fact is they recognize the international market is more lucrative for big acts like bp, bts etc. So of course they gonna release songs with lyrics that most can understand. I feel like some idols went beyond kpop already, and are slowly known as just singers by how successful they have become in the west *cough* Jungkook *cough*.

but what about nugu groups that no one has ever heard of that are korean korean? wouldn't they be still kpop even though they aren't very successful?

yeah they would, i bring in the topic of success only in the mushy areas where the members arent all korean or the songs arent all korean

there is the question tho, are they kpop if they arent pop? cause we see tons of rappers coming in to the kpop scene on shoes, although they considered themselves indie. On the other hand, groups that do korean pop music, sing mostly only in korean, have mostly just korean members and only perform in korea and are only recognised by the korean fans, then yeah obviously they can be considered kpop. Look at there success also contributes to this.

that is another side to the question I guess but given that you've discussed success and pop stands for popular music if those artists are somewhat successful/popular they could theoretically be classified as kpop no?

Yes, some ppl think of them as kpop.
I think i saw an interview like that with a singer. There was this same question, are korean indie bands, rockers, rappers, jazz musicians included in kpop?
You probably would say no, but it depends if they are in the circles of kpop. Kpop music shows, concerts, fan culture, cause they could choose to only perform on festivals and go to only rock or jazz festivals to perform, but some of them go to kpop conventions too.
Also the fact is , even among kpop songs, that we consider kpop there are a lot of genres combined and mixed. Song writers including more genres to adapt to new trends, and to bring smth new to the table.

One time hip hop was the trend, then tropical house, Electronic, now the minimalist Doja Cat sound that blew up.

Well indie does mean for them underground, not affiliated with anything major. Bubbling or nugu or still need a breakout hit, it is used like that.

Don't wanna sound shallow in this, as ive said, it doesnt have to be successful all the time to be considered kpop. Maybe we can call it relevant, if something is relevant and accepted in kpop scene then it is kpop.

Would u consider Oli London kpop? Cause he does of himself, but plenty ppl dont see him as such.

no - I sorta agree with cosmic nightmare above in that one of the defining traits of a kpop idol is the training they go through
it is very harsh and grueling and no matter what we hear or see on documentaries or whatever I don't think it fully encapsulates what they go through and I think there's a strong bond of kpop idols when they debut since they all know what each of them have gone through (obviously each person's situation is different) but the overall experience of it is very unique

Yeah, but there is the problem that not every kpop idol goes through training. I think Baekhyun did only 1 month and someone from Loona only a day, also when they sign bands, they dont train them, just release music with them.

I always see so much division when this question is asked. I’ve stopped having an opinion and caring because there’s too many viewpoints to keep track of

NiziU is definitely K-pop and so is AKB48. NiziU follows the kpop equation perfectly for obvious reasons and AKB48 has more in common with kpop than Jpop. AKB members flawlessly went to kpop and back without hesitation.

I think this is the first and probably last time I’ll hear call AKB kpop

What makes K-pop, well, K-pop is its catchy tunes, cool dance moves, and awesome music videos. You know, it's all about those singers and dancers putting in tons of practice to get everything just right. Plus, there's this whole vibe to it, like a mix of different music styles that makes it totally unique. And let's not forget how K-pop idols really connect with fans, making it feel like you're part of something special. That's what makes K-pop, K-pop!
