Chapter 1

“We are now preparing for landing in beautiful, sunny West Palm Beach,” the captain of the plane announced during the tail end of my flight from Nashville. “Please keep your seatbelts fastened until the sign has gone off.”

The reason I was going to West Palm Beach was to reconnect with a childhood friend who had moved away in second grade. Her name is Lydia Martinez, and we’d been inseparable from the time we were still in diapers until she moved.

I let my mind wander as I thought about seeing Lydia again, and the next thing I knew, the plane had landed, and everybody was getting off with their bags. Smiling, I followed suit with my backpack and purse and weaved my way through the large crowds to baggage claim. Once I retrieved my suitcase, I picked up a rental car and drove to Lydia’s house.

“Hey, stranger!” Lydia exclaimed with a hug after she answered the doorbell. “I haven’t seen you in a hot minute! I thought you were bringing your boyfriend, though?”

I tightened my embrace, and then we finally pulled away. “Isaac has to work this weekend, so he couldn’t come.”

“Oh, that’s a shame.” She glanced at my belly and added, “And who’s this?”

“My twin girls,” I said. “I’m five weeks out.”

“Well, congrats! What are their names going to be?”

“Aveline Rose and Elodie Grace. That way, they have matching vowels in their names.”

“Wow, they do! Those are lovely names. Ava and Ella for short, right?”

“Nah, just Aveline is getting a nickname. I’m just going to call Elodie by her full name because it’s pretty and deserves to be used in full.”

“Sweet! Let’s catch up over dinner. I made fajitas!”

“Oh, yum!”

I followed Lydia into the kitchen, where she dished out two tortillas. After we assembled our fajitas, we sat down at the dining table and dug in.

“So, tell me about Isaac,” Lydia prompted

“Isaac and I had met in high school when he’d moved in from Ridgeland, Mississippi. We fell for each other’s accents and southern charm, and we started dating pretty much right away.”

“How long have you been together?”

“What have you been doing? You said you’re having trouble finding the right guy?”

“Yeah, it seems like every first date I go on has turned sour. One guy was just looking for a side chick, another admitted to having a boob fetish, and a third… well, that first date actually went pretty well, but his wife found out from a spectator, apparently a friend of his, and crashed our date.”

“Goodness gracious! So, you were the other chick?”

“I guess so,” Lydia said with a shrug. “That’s why I’ve been single for just over a year now.”

“I hope karma came and bit her in the butt – that’s pretty rude!”

Lydia chuckled. “Yeah, she got carded on the way out of the restaurant. Turns out she was an illegal immigrant, so they had to deport her back to her home country.”

“Oh, wow!”

“Yeah, I know.”

Our conversation ended up going on for two hours, and by the tail end, I was starting to get tired.

“Where can I sleep?” I asked. “I’m fixing to go to bed.”

“You can sleep in the guest room,” Lydia informed me. “And tomorrow night, we’re going to see 5 Seconds of Summer!”

“Who’s that? I’ve heard the name, but I’m not sure I’ve heard any of their music.”

“Oh, you’re missing out! You said you like All Time Low, right? They’re like them, but even better.”

“Oh, okay! How good are the seats?”

“First row, front and center; I won them in a radio contest.”

“Oh, I’m looking forward to it already; I haven’t had good concert seats in forever! Goodnight.”

“Sleep well.”

After I got ready for bed, I called Isaac to let him know I’d arrived.

“Jessi, did you make it?” he asked after he picked it up. “You said you’d call me as soon as you got to Lydia’s.”

“Yeah, sorry,” I apologized. “I got caught up talking with her. We spent all evening just chatting, and time got away from me.”

“It’s alright. What are y’all doing tomorrow?”

“She’s taking me to a concert by this band called 5 Seconds of Summer. She’d won backstage passes, so we get to meet them as well.”

“Oh, sweet! Well, I hope you have a good time, babe. Love and miss you!”

“You, too.”

The following evening, Lydia and I went to the stadium early enough to get our merch before the concert. There was already a line when we got to the merch station, but it wasn’t very long, and we made our purchases (we both got hoodies) within ten minutes.

We had barely turned around to go to our seats when I bumped into someone by accident.

“Oh, sorry,” I said to the guy I’d bumped into, who had a friend in tow. “I didn’t see you there.”

Both guys were about six foot tall and tattooed. The impacted one had shaggy, white-blond hair and an eyebrow stud, and his friend had spiky, golden blond hair and a lip ring.

“No problem,” he said in what sounded like an English accent. “I’m Michael, that’s Luke, and we’re with the band. And you are?”

“Holy fuck!” Lydia shouted in surprise. “It’s… you’re…”

“From 5 Seconds of Summer, of course!” Luke said with a smile. “What are your names, ladies?”

“Uh… I forget all of a sudden.”

I giggled. “That’s Lydia Martinez, and I’m Jessi Warren,” I answered on Lydia’s behalf. “Apparently, she’s a huge fan.”

“So, where are your seats? We can take you there, if you want,” Michael offered.

“Front row on the floor. Thank you so much!”

“Our pleasure!”

We started walking towards the stadium, and Luke asked, “Are you girls from here?”

“I am, but she’s not,” Lydia said. “She’s from Tennessee. Well, so am I, technically, but… yeah, this is where I live.”

“You sound cute when you’re nervous, you know that?”

“Well, what can I say? You’re my idols!”

“What part of Tennessee do you come from, Jessi?” Michael asked.

“Hendersonville; it’s just northeast of Nashville,” I said. “What part of England do you come from?”

“Jess, they’re Australian!” Lydia corrected me, making me blush.

“Oops… my bad,” I said nervously. “So, what part of…”

“Sydney,” Michael said. “It’s alright, we get England a lot because we lived there during the first part of our career.”

“Oh, I heard it’s gorgeous down there. Is that true?”

“Yes, very much so. The beaches are especially breathtaking, with white sand and the deep blue ocean. Maybe if we get married, we could go there on honeymoon.”

I laughed. “Maybe.”

“What about Hendersonville?” Luke asked. “What’s it like there?”

“Pretty boring compared to Sydney. There’s a lot to do in Nashville, though.”

“Yes, we were there earlier on the tour,” Michael said. We reached our seats, and he added, “There you are, girls; enjoy the show!”

“We sure will,” Lydia said.

Chapter 2

For the entire show, I couldn’t keep my eyes off Michael. There was something about the way he bounced around onstage while playing his guitar that made me want him. Was I still in love with Isaac? Yes. But was I willing to risk breaking up with him for Michael? Totally! I mean, Isaac is sweet and charming, which is all I wanted in a guy, but Michael is sweet, charming, and hot!

After the concert, Lydia and I were stopped by Luke and Michael again.

“Hello, ladies,” Michael greeted us. “Did you enjoy it?”

“Oh, y’all were wonderful!” I praised. “Especially you, Michael; I kept my eyes on you the whole time.”

Michael chuckled. “Yes, I noticed during chat breaks. I think I’ve a fancy for you as well.”

My jaw dropped. “You’re kidding – me too!”

“Then perhaps we should make a date? How about pizza for dinner tomorrow night?”

“No, I’d rather do lunch. I’m going to be too busy packing for my flight home the next morning.”

“That sounds good. Shall I pick you up?”

“Sure! Let me give you Lydia’s address.”

After I put the date into my phone calendar, I caught a glimpse of Lydia handing Luke his phone back.

“Were you just exchanging numbers?” I asked Lydia.

“We were!” Lydia confirmed. “Luke and I are going on a date Friday night, and he said he’ll call me in the morning to set it up.”

“Cool! We’ve both got dates, then; Michael is taking me out for lunch tomorrow.”

“That’s awesome!” Lydia and I said goodbye to Luke and Michael, and then we went our separate ways.

When we got home, I called Isaac to break up with him for Michael.

“What?!” he spat. “Jessica, you can’t dump me now! I was fixing to propose!”

I sighed. “I’m sorry, but I’ve met someone else and we’re going on our first date tomorrow.”

I could sense smoke coming out of Isaac’s ears. “I will NOT stand for this! I had a whole game plan with a super-expensive ring!”

“Well, guess what?! I was going to ask if we could still be friends, but never fucking mind, with that attitude of yours! It’s over, and I’m moving out!”

There was heavy breathing on Isaac’s end before he spoke again. “Well, mark my words – I’ll get you back if it’s the last thing I do!”

I laughed. “I’d love to see you try.” Then, I hung up and went to bed.

The next day, Michael picked me up at 12:30 for lunch. He smiled when I answered his doorbell.

“Well, you look cute,” he complimented me.

“Thank you,” I said. “With my pregnancy weight gain, I’ve been feeling a little insecure lately.”

“Well, you are glowing! If you look like this pregnant, I can only imagine what you look like normally.”

I scoffed. “I look like a whale.”

“Ah, but a cute whale! You make the boy whales go…” He then perfectly mimicked a whale sound, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“You’ve seen ‘The Princess Diaries’, haven’t you?” I asked. “That’s from the part where she’s at the salon and she thinks she looks like a moose.”

“Yes, I’m glad you’ve caught that! Let’s go, I’m hungry!”

When we got to the pizza place, Michael asked for a table for two.

“Right this way,” the host said, leading us to a table near the door. “Your server will be with you in just a moment.”

“Thank you,” I said as I slowly sat down across from Michael.

“So, first thing’s first – boy or girl?” Michael asked me after we decided to share a large Hawaiian pizza and cannoli for dessert.

“It’s twins, actually,” I corrected him. “Twin girls, and I’m naming them Aveline Rose and Elodie Grace.”

“Nice! I can totally see myself calling their names. What’s your due date?”

“October 19th.”

“That’s around the time our second album comes out! Maybe a bloke could gift you a copy as a push present.” Michael winked after he finished the last sentence.

I laughed. “No, I don’t need a push present. Besides, isn’t that the real dad’s job?”

“That’s a fair point. Who’s the father?”

“My ex-boyfriend. He wasn’t too happy when I dumped him last night, though.”

Michael frowned at this. “Oh, what happened? Are you okay?”

“Yeah, my skin’s pretty thick. He threatened to break us up and steal me back, but I didn’t really believe him because honestly, what guy in his right mind would do that?”

“Exactly! So, you’ve nothing to worry about.”

A waitress came at that point and introduced herself as Desiree, saying she was our server today.

“What can I get you to drink?”

“Just water,” Michael replied.

“Same here,” I agreed.

“Do you need some time to look over the menu?” Desiree asked.

“Nah, we’re ready,” Michael said. “We’ll have a large Hawaiian pizza.”

“Awesome! We’ll get that out to you as soon as possible.”

Desiree took our menus and walked away, and then we continued the conversation.

“So, now that you know I’m in a famous rock band, what do you do for a living?”

“I’m a dog walker,” I said. “I’m out of commission right now, obviously, because of the pregnancy, but I’m doing what I love and love what I’m doing.”

“So are we. How long have you been doing it?”

“A couple of years now. I also have a dog of my own, but I didn’t bring her because Lydia is allergic.”

“Sweet! We have something else in common, then, because I have a little terrier mix called Southy.”

“Aw, he sounds cute! Mine is a Lab crossed with a German shepherd, and her name is Toffee.”

“He is, and your pup sounds cute as well. How long have you had her?”

“Since last year. She used to belong to a client of mine, but they had to surrender her because the place they were moving to didn’t allow pets.”

“That’s a shame. Has her name always been Toffee?”

“Her name was originally Holly because her birthday is around Christmas, but I didn’t like that name. What about you, how did you adopt Southy?”

“He was stuck in an abandoned house. I guess the previous owners moved and didn’t bother to either take or surrender him.” Michael chuckled. “The only thing he had to keep him entertained was a blue dryer ball, and he still has it to this day.”

Suddenly, something behind me caught Michael’s attention. When I turned around, I saw Desiree waiting on another group of customers, a young family of three.

“Are you looking at our waitress?” I asked suspiciously. “We’re on a date!”

“I know, I know,” Michael said. “I just realized something: she just might be the type of girl Ashton is looking for.”

“Oh? How so?”

“Well, his type of girl is one who is funny, chatty, kind, and good-looking, and Desiree seems to tick off all four boxes.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Good-looking?”

Michael put a reassuring hand on mine. “Not as good-looking as you are, Jessi.”

I gave him an appreciative smile. “Thank you.”

Desiree’s POV

Before I could walk away after giving the couple at Table 7 their pizza, the guy called me back.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“I noticed you waiting on the table behind us, and from the looks of it, you’d be perfect for a mate of mine called Ashton Irwin.”

“Michael!” the girl protested. “You don’t know if she’s single!”

“So? She’s not got a ring.”

“Actually, I am single,” I said. “What’s this Ashton like?”

“He’s a character, that one. He’s charming, sensitive, funny, and the ladies think he’s pretty hot.”

“Oh, I love a hot man! Can you give me his number?”

“Absolutely!” Michael wrote Ashton’s name and number down on a napkin, and I pocketed it.

“Thank you so much. Is there anything else you need?”

“No, I think we’re good,” the girl answered. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”
