lying is absolutely appropriate in certain circumstances - maybe it's to protect a loved one, maybe it's related to children since they don't understand, hell even a surprise birthday or surprise engagement involves lying

the question really is does the "benefit outweigh the lie" and if one considers it so then one would lie otherwise one wouldn't...

depends on context for white lies, but full on lies will always come back to bite you later
