I was told today to find all numbers that only use the digit 9 (no other digits) and when divided by 5 make a whole number. First response I like gets a cookie :chill:

infinite...????

9 / 5 is 1.8
99 / 5 is 19.8
999 / 5 is 199.8

etc etc

I'm assuming the language used is "divisible" and not some other iterations of perfectly divisible or something

I don't think such a number exists.

If W is your whole number, and N is the number made up only of 9s, then you're looking for W x 5 = N. But any whole number multiplied by 5 can produce only a 0 or 5 in the ones place.

0 x 5 = 0
1 x 5 = 5
2 x 5 = 10
3 x 5 = 15
...

Put it another way, there is no whole number which, when multiplied by 5, will produce a 9 in the ones place.

That’s the expected answer. But not the one I came up with :pepesmug: But it would depend on the exact wording of the question

with a lot of those "online maths problems" the issue isn't the maths but the language used
actually it's the same with tests and stuff - a lot of times they try not to get you with the actual maths or whatever but it's the language that confuses people

If you guys are curious with the answer I came up with I said 9.999 repeating. They never said not to use decimals, and 9.999 repeating is the same at 10, which is divisible by 5 :sanapray: Ofc its not the only number though.
