It's read as the word "Mama" because it saves time and sounds better than saying each letter-- "M-A-M-A Award......."
Plus, people who are aware already know it's not an award show for mothers.

It's the same with Screen Actors' Guild Awards show or SAG Awards where people say it as "Sag" and not spelled out as "S-A-G."
