If I remember right, the idea of elf on a shelf is that he reports back to Santa Clause if a child behaved naughty or not
I personally don’t like the idea to tell a child that they need to behave 'good', otherwise they are on Santa's bad list and they might not getting any presents
Because what does good or bad behavior means? How do we define it?
It’s just a really old way to make children behave and it doesn’t sit right with me

there actually a funny story to go along with this
so my kindergarten class used to have one and that same year my cousin was getting hers and she was scared of it and my mom and my aunt were talking about her on the phone and i allegedly said "it's not real, why are you scared of it?"...my mom was starting to think about getting me one....that idea ended real fast

Oh I genuinely thought elf on a shelf was where you had to hide the elf somewhere and the elf was getting into mischief (like using the toilet bowl as a cereal bowl) as a joke each day I don’t like the version of it you described
