Yeah...when I was in 6th grade, we had to do a computer course where in semester we had to focus on typing and refining it and semester 2 was all about internet safety. I think it was a pretty good age to teach kids about it because we're entering or at the beginning of adolescence. And when we can legally get social media lol

Aww thank you! And that's why I made this thread! There are a lot of people who have Instagram and post public photos of themselves. Any of those people are in danger of getting one of these people in their DMs.

I'm glad you (or they) didn't accept the offer! Never ever accept checks without knowing the person and definitely not over the internet. If they are really offering you money, it should be through a secure method like PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, etc. or through a dropshipping app like eBay, Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. Even so, you still have to be careful.

Like I remember being on a KPOP forum and someone DMed me offering to have me buy a Jihyo photocard I didn't have from them. They kept saying that it will be fine and they were an actual user too but noticed I expressed interest.

The problem with that was there was no official shopping on the forum. This would mean that some random would be getting my address and my payment and I have no way of knowing that they'll give me my product. Yes, there are laws against it but it's just so much easier buying off of a site where there's a third party involved that will track your order and keep your info private while still making the transaction. It's also easier to contact their support about a product or scam than to take it to the internet law enforcement (this also exists I found out)

I did get messages like this on insta. Luckily, I never gave out my personal infos and non of them are showed on my profile either. Not even my real name. I don’t trust random people and if they offer you something, it’s always suspicious. No matter if it’s free or money are involved, it’s always a scam. I always block them/report them/delete their message. I’m always cautious.

However, one time my American cousin wrote to me on insta that she launched her own clothing brand and will open a shop, too. I was so happy to read this because my cousin actually is interested in fashion and clothes. It seemed real. But things caught my eyes:
1) she addressed me by my full first name - which my cousin never does, 2) she was too bland, 3) she seemed to think that I live in the US - which is false, 4) she asked for my phone number - when in reality she knows it. I immediately knew what’s going on and it’s a scam and her account is hacked. I asked my other relative if they heard about our cousin’s new business. Ofc, no. I asked my cousin on Facebook if she is hacked, while at the same time, the person on insta told me she can’t contact my phone number and gives me a link to join her private group about the said clothing brand. I never clicked on the link and ofc, the phone number I gave was also false. She urged me to click on the link and 1 hour after asked again why I didn’t do it. That person was so eager to scam me.
At the end, I deleted my messages, even the fake phone number and blocked my cousin - who wasn’t her. 2 days later my real cousin wrote back to me on Facebook that she was hacked. Conclusion is that you don’t even trust your own family members if they ask for: - money, - your phone number, - your address.

Yeah, oftentimes they tell you these things too late.
One of the things we learned about in that class (which I thought was pretty daunting when I was that age) was about sending certain photos to people because they can use that against you and now I realize how important that is. My heart goes out to anyone who's been a victim of that.

That's true. But not always because you might have won something. Like I trust most scholarship websites because a lot of them have to be verified to be put on there and are reputable organizations. I recommend always doing your research because they love to entice you with things that are too good to be true only to get you in a trap where you win nothing and they get everything (or that they actually do give it to you but pressure you into giving them your information)

I didn't know they did that but I think it makes sense considering it happens so often that a hacker will create a new account with the same pfp and name as one of my family members or friends and send a friend request. I always check their profile and make sure that they have posts because that's a dead giveaway. I also always alert them immediately telling them that their account has been hacked or there's an impersonator of you.

I hate that people will attempt to destroy others' lives in an attempt to make some money. It's cowardly, malicious, and it's lazy. And unfortunately, it works. And it doesn't matter how many rules these social media and other sites put up; they always find a way around it. That's why the best we can do is educate each other.

Some people will do anything for either fame or fortune, even if it means destroying other livelihoods to get it. Such a shame.
