I remembering reading something about the western legal system that the concept of innocent until proven guilty and beyond all reasonable doubt meant that it was better to let 100 guilty people go free as oppose to lock up one innocent person

More like let any criminal go if they have lots of money and can pay you and lock up anyone you dont care for if they cant pay you enough to be worthwhile Oh wait not patriotic enough yes murica great all innocents can go no matter what

More seriously yes the idea of innocent until proven guilty is supposed to be a thing, and the ideal is that you let 100 guilty people go to prevent a single innocent being locked up. It is more or less one of the founding ideas of the system. Whether it happens is very different. I assume its like that in Australia also? But I'd imagine maybe not a thing in China

yes that is very true but it's the best system we have no? unless you want the chinese system? lol

in theory it's all based on evidence and the rule of law etc etc but in reality it's how much damage you've done to the peace and how badly you've fucked up since if the gov wants you gone you're gone!!!

I once had this discussion with a friend who said something like a universal legal care system (kinda like universal health care) which was an interesting idea in theory lol

Its hard to say because I'm not that well versed in different legal systems. I can make widespread claims (no death penalty because of the chance the jury is wrong, no widespread bribery would be nice, transparency would have benefits, improving situations for mental health among people would be worthwhile to reduce crimes happening) but I cant get much farther than that. Have you seen the film Minority Report?

The system there reminded me of this, the idea of letting 100 guilty people go to save one innocent from prison, since their idea was pretty opposite. It’s what came to mind about other legal systems than what we have in the west. It was an interesting film
