i have to confess i have a bad habit of looking at the most recent comments on youtube videos which are usually really negative or silly. but the comments on this video blew my mind.
it was a video of a deaf content creator, using an audio. the video was him saying:
"your son is deaf, and you didn't learn sign language? and now you're deaf [because of old age]? karma."
now, i understand how this can come across as rude: some people don't have the time, the resources, they struggle learning it, have disabilities etcetera.
but the thing is, this video doesn't apply to these people. it doesn't apply to people who really care about their children. it applies to parents who are not disabled and have the resources to learn at least the sign language alphabet but, for some reason, do not want to learn it. they are denying their child basic communication, for what reason? laziness? no one's asking you to be fluent: even though that is the best option, learning every letter and taking time to spell it out is okay.
"how is it karma? that's rude!!"
it is karma because: you have a deaf child. for some reason, you do not want to communicate with them or teach them how to communicate with other people. then, you become deaf because of old age. now what? because of laziness, ableism, whatever it is that ""stopped"" you from actually caring about your kid, you have to go through the same things you made them go through. that is karma: do a bad or good thing, get a bad or good thing in return. my hispanic brain could also be misinterpreting this.
"well there's other forms of communication.." "just wear hearing aids!!"
yes there are other forms of communication, but sign language is the most common one. i saw a comment say: "[...] just use hearing aids, implants, etc.". notice how all the examples are saying that the deaf person needs to make an effort to communicate with hearing people and not the other way around? why can't we just simply do the bare minimum and try to do it the other way around instead? i don't understand why the deaf person is the one responsible for speaking to us when they are the ones with complications that we don't have?
now, i am a hearing and able-bodied(? person, so my opinion comes from the POV of someone who has never experienced this situation. am i in the wrong? if i am, please tell me
i would like to reevaluate my perspective on the theme. also, some of the words i used can give off the wrong message: i am not a native english speaker, so please correct me or ask me what my intention was so i can clear it up.
