It’s was in an article (rightfully) slamming a woman for claiming that earthquakes and eclipses are caused by climate change. But one quote stuck out to me as seeming pretty inaccurate. “We’re unfortunately past the point in the history of mankind where something can just happen and there not be 1,000 conspiracy theories birthed from it.”. Does this happen now? Ofc. But in the past was this not just as much of a thing, if not worse? Where else do we get religion from? Even if you’re religious I think it’s a safe bet that you view other religions, particularly ancient polytheistic ones, as an attempt to explain away events that are now explained by science. Thunder and lightning happened? Zeus is angry. Why did the sun rise and set each day? Ra was on his daily sun boat journey. Are these just not glorified conspiracy theories, thereby meaning in recorded history we never had a time when conspiracy theories were used to explain things happening? Discuss
