I used to be a huge US pop fan when I was a young teen and would never expect I'd enjoy rock/metal or anything not from America

I hated Gangnam style and assumed all kpop was like it

Not really. It does fit imo given that there’s certain countries you particularly like music from. So I that regard I could see a younger you liking music from one particular country, and considering a lot of times kids/teens think they have it all figured out and that their opinions won’t change as they get older I could see you assuming that’s the music you’ll always like. I know I definitely as a kid and teen thought my interests would remain constant
