What kinds of topics did you learn about when covering WW2? (1 Viewer)

I figure todays a good day to post this Ive seen various videos and such about how it’s taught in different countries and there’s definitely a range of topics emphasized and such. To be expected but the differences are still interesting.

Honestly I don’t remember covering WW2 that much. Ofc it happened but a lot of the stuff kind of just slipped out of my head. I do remember a lot of emphasis was placed on D-Day, I remember learning about it all the way back in elementary school. But in elementary school we didn’t cover D-Day as a whole, just Omaha beach. I honestly don’t even know if they mentioned that other countries were involved in D-Day back then. Probably not. I’m pretty sure we would have covered that in high school but I don’t remember for certain I do remember leaning about Japan and especially the massacre of Nanjing but I don’t remember much else taught about the Sino-Japanese war. We learned about island hopping too. I think we covered the invasion of the Soviet Union but very quickly and with little detail. The firebombing of Dresden was mentioned in passing. And lastly, the atomic bombs were brought up but in my school personally the teacher taught them as something that was factually necessary for the war to be won, while I know in some US schools the morality is debated. Oh and ofc the Holocaust was taught in great detail, we covered it a lot in history (though I only remember learning about the Jews, not everyone else) and we read a memoir in English class written by a Holocaust survivor.

I will be honest and say that I did not pay attention during history class. I foubd it boring. Only thing I do remember was that there was a heavy emphasis on Canada’s role in WW2 (or really any other point of history covered).

Ngl I think there would be many Americans who don’t know Canada was involved For some reason I feel like Canada was unfortunately ignored here

Doesn’t America basically ignore the existence of any other country besides themselves?

Of course not, you can’t fight a war with just America! You need bad guys too! We absolutely learned a lot about Japan and Germany. Or rather, we learned a lot about the bad things they did. We couldn’t get into their politics and such, that could potentially be too humanizing.

Ngl I think everything in history here couldn’t possibly have been mentioned without mentioning America, Germany, Japan, etc. If I remember correctly, we were definitely more humanizing. It was more just layed out as this is what happened but that happened because this happened etc etc

Like in regards to WW2 specifically? Or Canadian history as a whole?
I’m pretty sure a ton of Americans would be shocked to learn that the Nazi party gained power democratically originally. I don’t feel like we’re taught about how that managed to happen with the end of WW1 going the way it did.

Tbh I feel like there were some parts of history where the US was very dependent on other nations and you can’t really teach history without them but we still somehow manage to forget they existed

Possibly SS, Hitler and his blonde hair blue eyes ideal race?

social, political, economic context pre-war on the western and eatern fronts, pacific theater; catalysts of the war basically and what solidified the conflicts, a bit less on the resolution, then the option to focus on source study for one of the three fronts

basically "this year this thing happened" and a lot of focus on dates and then on events happening in our country, poland. but honestly i wasn't really paying attention in history class either since it was basically the teacher's monologue and it was usually our last class that day
