And my next tattoo will be when my daughter is born (I have all of my daughters' names and DOBs tattooed on my left torso)

my friend what made you get a tattoo in the first place?

Tattoos are really big in my family. I am the least tattooed member in my whole family, including things like my cousins, aunts/uncles, grandparents. So it was one of those "of course you will get a tattoo" kind of things growing up. My first tattoo, I got on my 18th birthday, from an artist my parents knew and chose. I don't think the tattoo artist said more than two sentences to me, but he chatted with my parents the whole time. And that's the one I just covered up about a month ago at this point.

I got my second tattoo because I saw some art I really liked and knew the tattoo artist via a lot of my gym friends who all had her tattoos. It was a much better experience getting something I chose by an artist I chose and it was just the two of us.

My whole family hates it though lol.

My girls all love my tattoos and they adore the tattoos that I have for them. They know that they are so special to me and that they've left their mark on my life

I guess!! It's definitely it's own, like, subculture. When shows like Miami Ink were on, I think that really made it seem more like a thing a "normal" person could want.

I wanted it at the time, but I wish my family had pushed me into thinking about it more rather than pushing me into getting it. It was a lot more painful to get it covered up than to get it initially, and even though I'm much happier with my coverup, I don't know that I would have gotten it tattooed if it wasn't to coverup something I was unhappy with. I don't have a lot of tattoos in part because, once I think about them enough, I don't know that I really feel the need to have it permanently on my skin.

That's fair! The one on my forearm was fine, but the one on my ankle was very unpleasant to get.

It's right on bone there, so I would recommend getting it up a few inches from the ankle! The lowest point of my tattoo just touches that little knobby bone on the ankle. That was unpleasant. 🙃

Not really. I was happy at the time when I went into get my first one, even though I came to dislike it and it put me off from getting tattooed again for a long time. Getting the second one with an artist of my choice and art of completely my own choice with none of my families' interference or thoughts (until afterward) made me understand why people can get hooked on getting tattoos. It's almost a relaxing experience. And I'm glad that I had that experience so I was willing to move forward with getting a coverup and not dislike my own body anymore.

Like, if I never got one in the first place, I think I probably still would have come around to it eventually, just maybe less slowly. And in a way, that's nice that I only have two visible tattoos now, because I see people who have things like a brands they liked at the time tattooed on them or celebrity references, and I think early 20s me might have been amenable to getting meaningless things that are of the moment that I would have grown out of. I just have flowers on me now; I don't think I'll ever come to finding tulips offensive lol.

Maybe, but no immediate plans! My coverup is on my right ankle on the outside, it's a basket of tulips. So I've thought it would be cute to add to the inside of my ankle the wara-wara or soot sprites or something catching flower petals as they float around. Basically finish it off into an anklet kind of tattoo.

But it was pretty uncomfortable to get tattooed there (just all around, having to lay on my shoulder and hip for 3 hours, as much as the tattoo itself) so I'm not that eager to repeat the experience.
