Because the contract is almost up... and they know they are done for if Gidle leaves. But Gidle doesn't need to be named Gidle. You could rename Gidle "purple pumpkin hummers" and they'd still kill it. Those girls don't need Cube and it show's how stupid Cube is for this stunt. Also, it amazes me how often trademarks are outright denied in Korea.

Apink is doing good and has escaped IST, STAYC is in good hands and seems happy. I think Soyeon has done great things with Gidle. She did good helping produce Apink's Namjoo's Single "Bird". I want to see what she can do with more freedom.

I think as time goes on she becomes more of a producer and behind the scenes stuff and less artist but she'll still do Gidle stuff maybe once a year and maybe release her own stuff once every two??? years

I think it's weird when you don't see this in other martkets, at least not in the American music market. Papa Roach has been signed to six different record labels, and hasn't had to fight to keep their name ever, despite only having two original members. In all her lawsuits, whether or not she could be "Ke$ha" or "Kesha" was never part of the contention. Same thing with JoJo (real name Joanna Levesque).

But kpop companies will act like they own idols' real names just because they used it on the stage. And to be frank, it's not like (G)I-DLE has value to Cube without the current iteration of girls. To me, this would be as absurd as if YGE tried to keep "G-Dragon" even though no one would ever accept a new GD.

It's not that Cube wants the trademark; it's that they waited until six years after the group's debut to file for the trademark. If they'd filed for it in 2018, no one would see a problem.

Timing can make the world of difference in context though, Cube absolutely would have had the money to trademark (G)I-dle closer to around their debut and no one really would have cared because (G)I-dle wouldn't have established their own public image and would have been known for being from Cube.

Going for the trademark now though feels disingenuous and only to mess around with (G)I-dle because the girls have an established public image and aren't just known as a Cube group and depending on just how long is left on (G)I-dles contracts there's a chance Cube gets rejected since this is exactly what Source Music tried with Gfriend which got denied for this exact reasoning.
