Yes, assuming you get enough protein in general. An average protein shake is 25-30 grams of protein, and for building/maintaining muscle, you should consume around 1 - 1.4 grams of protein per kg of of body weight (or about .5 - .7 grams per lb). You also can't just chug it all in one go, like you can't make a protein shake with four scoops of powder to down 100 grams of protein at once, since your body can't metabolize it all in shot like that; you have to spread it out throughout the day. So yesterday, I had 53 grams of protein without a protein shake, and 78 grams with, which is within the range. I do strength training three times a week, hoping to consistently be able to squat and deadlift over 200 lbs and bench press over 100 lbs by the end of the year. It's also just good functional fitness; everything you want to do, like be able to lift luggage over your head to board an airplane, carry groceries, lug laundry upstairs, etc. requires strength. I want to be able to do things like that my whole life, and not end up like older generations in my family, needing expensive assisted living.
