Chapter 1: School Isn't the Only Thing That's Over

“And that’s a wrap on Spanish 3,” Mr. Melendez said to his students at the end of class. The dismissal bell had just rung, and Zoe Olson couldn’t wait to start her summer vacation. “Have a great summer, and I’ll see you all again next year!”

As soon as she finished cleaning out her locker, Zoe was joined by Marcus Thorburn, her boyfriend since ninth grade.

“Hey, Zoe,” Marcus greeted Zoe. “Can we talk?”

“Talk about what?” Zoe asked, unaware that Marcus was about to break up with her.

Marcus sighed. “Stop smiling at me; you’re making this hard. It’s about us.”

Zoe’s smile turned into a frown. “You’re not breaking up with me, are you? We’ll have a mouth to feed soon!”

Just then, Cassie Craig, Zoe’s arch-nemesis, came strutting down the hall as she approached them.

“Actually, I believe he is,” Cassie said smugly, doing a hair flip. She then wrapped her arms around Marcus’s waist. “Right, babe?”

“Babe?!” Zoe repeated to Marcus. “You’re cheating?!”

Marcus sighed. “Yeah, I’ve been cheating since the day after we had sex. I’m sorry.”

“Yeah, you deserved to get cheated on, slut!” Cassie taunted, making Zoe angrier than she already was.

“I only had sex ONCE!” Zoe argued. “That does NOT make me a slut… boyfriend stealer! And Marcus, this relationship is over! I can’t believe I got pregnant by a two-timer!”

“Fatso!” Cassie returned.

“Psychopath!” Zoe retaliated.

Before she could retort to Zoe, Cassie was cut off by a loud clearing of the throat. The culprit had been Mrs. Collins, Zoe’s chemistry teacher, and she had an angry look on her face with arms akimbo.

“Miss Craig, if this wasn’t the last day of school, I’d put you in detention immediately. Bullying is an intolerable offense, and you know it – yet you keep putting Miss Olson down!”

“Well, she deserved it!” Cassie defended.

“Nobody deserves to get bullied, bitch!” Zoe screamed.

Mrs. Collins put a firm hand on Zoe’s shoulder. “Just pack up and go. The more you interact with Miss Craig, the worse it’s going to get.”

Zoe took a deep breath and hugged her teacher. “Thank you… I needed that,” she said.

Zoe finished collecting her belongings and went outside just in time to see her brother Daniel’s car pulling up by the curb.

Daniel grew concerned when he saw her with her head down as she approached. Usually, Zoe would run straight into his arms, so this led him to assume something had happened.

“Hey, sis,” he said, wrapping his arms around her. “You look blue. What’s wrong?”

“Marcus and I broke up,” Zoe answered quietly. She opened the shotgun door to see another girl sitting there. “Oh, sorry.”

“It’s okay,” the girl said. “Hey, I like your outfit! Purple is my favorite color. I’m Julia, by the way – Julia Dean; you’re Zoe, right?”

Zoe laughed nervously as she climbed into the back. “Thanks… yeah, I’m Zoe.”

“So, what’s this about you and Marcus breaking up?” Daniel asked when Zoe had gotten into the backseat.

“I’d rather not talk about it. All I can tell you is that he broke my heart.”

“Hey, cheer up! You’ve got that One Direction concert coming up!”

“She does?!” Julia chimed in. “I love One Direction! I’m super-jealous of you, Zoe. Who’s your favorite member?”

“Niall,” Zoe said. “I’m even more excited about the opening act, though. It’s supposed to be this band from Australia called 5 Seconds of Summer.”

“Where is it? Louisville?”

“Yeah, Louisville on the 16th.”

“Cool! I hope you have fun!”

“I’m sure I will.”

“What?!” Mr. Olson exclaimed when Daniel spilled the tea on Zoe’s breakup. “Honey, what happened? He was so good to you!”

Zoe snuggled into her father’s arms as they sat down on the living room couch.

“He cheated on me with my arch-nemesis!” Zoe sobbed. “He’s hidden it all this time, and I found out the hard way.”

“And what hard way was that?”

“She strutted right up to us, put her arms around Marcus, and fucking…”

She couldn’t finish her sentence, which would’ve been the words “called me names”, but Mr. Olson caught on.

“Called you a bad name,” he predicted.

Zoe nodded and took the tissue he offered her. After she blew her nose on it, she said, “She called me a slut, and then we got into a verbal fight. She also called me a fatso.”

“Zoe Bear, you’re not either of those things! You only had sex once, and just because you’re heavily pregnant, doesn’t make you fat.”

“Thanks, Daddy,” Zoe said as they engaged in a long hug.

“Anytime. And remember, you have that concert coming up. Cheer up!”

“That’s true.”

it's anachronistic to use her, though - this is set in 2013 and the original pick I had for Zoe, I didn't realize it was so fugly until I saw it up close and didn't feel like Google Imaging again. lol

The original pic:
blond-and-caramel-swirls.jpg

okay, now that I look at it again, maybe it's not so fugly... but Zoe is a teen, which this girl doesn't even look like lol

Chapter 2: Got My Number

Before heading to the concert venue for soundcheck, the guys of 5 Seconds of Summer decided to grab an early dinner at Cracker Barrel. As soon as the four boys were seated with menus, Luke Hemmings caught a glimpse of a pretty girl about his age. She had long, golden blonde hair pulled back with a hairclip, suntanned skin, and was wearing a pink off-the-shoulder top and cutoff shorts.

“Are you looking at that gal over there?” Luke’s friend Ashton asked him.

“Yeah… she’s wonder,” Luke said dreamily.

“She’s not the only one at the table, though,” Michael pointed out. “I see two menus.”

Luke laughed. “Then maybe she brought a friend or something?”

“Or a boyfriend,” Ashton said when he saw a guy approach her table who looked older than she was. “Sorry about your luck, man.”

Luke sighed, but then the girl turned around to look at him. If this man was her boyfriend, he sure wasn’t being a very good one; he didn’t look one bit pissed that the girl was staring at another guy.

“Uh… sir?” Luke said to the guy. “I think your girlfriend is looking at me, mate.”

“Who, me?” Daniel asked the guy who had just addressed him… maybe. “No, I’m not her boyfriend – I’m her brother. I’m Daniel Olson, by the way, and my sister is Zoe. Zoe, this is… um…”

“Luke,” the guy said with a smile. “Luke Hemmings.”

“Nice to meet you!” Zoe said, shaking Luke’s hand. “Your name actually kind of sounds familiar. You’re not in 5 Seconds of Summer, are you? I heard a band with that name was opening for One Direction and that the lead singer’s name was Luke Hemmings.”

“Yes! Are you coming to see us?”

“I sure am! I’m coming tonight, actually; we just got in from down in Shepherdsville.”

“Oh, that’s cool! Where are your seats?”

“We’ll be in the front section, sixteenth row,” Daniel interjected.

“Awesome! Our band just may be having a meet and greet after our set if you want to say hello.”

“We’ll be there,” Zoe said with a smile.

After dinner, Zoe and Daniel stopped by Walmart, where Daniel bought a copy of an EP called “Somewhere New” for Zoe so she could have the guys sign it at the meet and greet. They listened to it in the car on the way to the arena, and Zoe said she really liked it.

And Zoe absolutely LOVED their set! Her favorite song they performed was “Heartbreak Girl” because she loved all the emotion put into it.

“Alright, we’ve got two more songs for you tonight!” Luke shouted through his mic. “But first, an announcement – we will be having a meet and greet after our set!”

Luke went on to tell the crowd they’d be holding the meet and greet by the merch stand just past Zoe and Daniel’s section.

“Oh, my God, Daniel!” Zoe exclaimed. “Can we go?!”

“Why do you think I bought that album for you?!” Daniel shouted back. “Of course! Let’s go now, actually – that way, we’ll be one of the first in line.”

“Good thinking.”

Zoe and Daniel left their seats to get in line, and by the time it was Zoe’s turn, she was extremely excited to see Luke again. During the guys’ performances, Zoe couldn’t take her eyes off Luke and the way he commanded the stage. It wasn’t just his stage presence, though – it was everything from the way he sang to his expressions to how he slammed his guitar like a rockstar.

But Zoe couldn’t possibly fall for a guy at his level, she decided. Surely, he’d be too busy with the band to help raise her baby, let alone be with her at all.

“Well, I’m happy to see you, too,” Luke said when he saw her beaming smile. “How was our set?”

“Y’all were amazing,” Zoe gushed. “That one song, ‘Heartbreak Girl’ – will that be on your first album, by any chance?”

While they were talking, Daniel gave Luke Zoe’s CD, which he signed and gave back.

“It sure will be! The album will come out sometime next year. Is it safe to say you’ll be listening?”

“Oh, I’m a huge fan!”

“She couldn’t take her eyes off of you the whole time,” Daniel confessed, much to Zoe’s embarrassment.

“Daniel! I’m NOT getting with him; he’s too busy with the band!”

“Ma’am, please move along,” a security guard said to Zoe. “There are other fans waiting in line, and there’s only so much time before One Direction comes out.”

“Selfie?” Luke asked, gesturing to Zoe to give him her phone.

“Yes, one picture and then she’ll have to go back to her seat.”

“Sorry, sis,” Daniel said with a shrug.

After Luke took the selfie with Zoe, the siblings went back to their seats. That was when Zoe realized Luke hadn’t only signed his name, but he wrote down his number as well. Daniel chuckled at his sister’s shocked expression.

“Now, what were you saying about not getting with Luke?” he asked. “When a guy gives a girl his number, that usually means he likes her. I dare you to call him in the morning.”

“No! And before you say anything about how I need a father figure for the baby, that’s what I’ve got you and our parents for!”

“Well, I have my own family to make, and Mom and Dad said they were done raising babies ages ago. What harm would it do to just pick up the phone, dial this number, and see where it takes you?”

Zoe sighed. “I’ll sleep on it.”

Chapter 3: The Call

By the next morning, Zoe had decided to call Luke after all. She did so after she ate breakfast.

“Hello?” Luke said when he answered.

“Hey, this is Zoe Olson,” Zoe greeted him. “You know, from Cracker Barrel and the meet and greet?”

“Oh, that chick in the pink top and shorts! I remember you very well. I was just thinking of asking you out, but of course, I don’t have your number.”

Zoe giggled. “You’re such a dork. Well, you do now! When did you want to take me out?”

“Are you free tonight? I looked at a map of Shepherdsville, and it says there’s a river nearby.”

“Yeah, the Salt River. What were you thinking of doing there?”

“I thought we’d have dinner at a riverside restaurant and then watch the sunset.”

“They have this amazing seafood place that has a view of the river. We should go there!”

“Then it’s settled! Google says the sun sets at about nine, so I’ll pick you up at seven.”

“I love that! Here’s my address…”

When Luke was finished jotting down Zoe’s address, he confirmed it with her. Then, they said goodbye and ended their call.

“Who was that, sweetie?” Mrs. Olson asked, having overheard Zoe’s phone call.

“That was my new date,” Zoe said, beaming with pride. “Luke and I are going to the river for dinner and to watch the sunset.”

Mrs. Olson sat down on the couch and took Zoe’s hands in hers. “Tell me about this Luke. Is he in your class?”

“No, he’s in the band I saw last night.”

“One Direction? Is he a new member?”

Zoe shook her head. “No, no… their opening act, 5 Seconds of Summer. He’s their lead singer.”

“They met at dinner last night and again at the meet and greet they were holding,” Daniel chimed in.

“Did you really?” Mrs. Olson asked.

Zoe nodded. “He thought Daniel was my boyfriend, so when he came up to say hi, the first thing Luke said was to Daniel that I was looking at him, another guy.”

Daniel laughed. “It’s true, he did. Why did he assume I was your boyfriend, anyway? We’re basically twins!”

Zoe shrugged. “I guess he saw the two menus on the table… I don’t know. I’ll have to ask him.”

“When is he picking you up?” Mr. Olson asked his daughter.

“Seven,” Zoe said. “Back by midnight, right?”

“Midnight on the dot – not one minute later.”

“So, a little birdie told me you have a date tonight!” Michael Clifford eagerly said. “Who with? That chick you gave your number to?”

“Yes, Zoe Olson. You remember her, don’t you? Pink top, jean shorts?”

“I do – I just never caught her name. Where are you taking her?”

“I found a river where she lives, so we’re going there for dinner and to watch the sunset.”

“Ooh, how romantic! Will there be anything for dessert?”

Luke glared at the guitarist. “Mikey, she’s pregnant.”

“Oh, yeah – I forgot.”

Luke used the GPS to get to Zoe’s place, and when he rang the doorbell, her dad answered the door. He was a tall man in his forties with salt and pepper hair and a graying mustache.

“Hey, I’m Luke Hemmings; I’m here to pick up your daughter,” Luke said.

“Of course; come on in!” Mr. Olson said, stepping aside so Luke could enter the house. “Sit tight, and I’ll get Zoe for you.”

Zoe came downstairs momentarily after being called on, and she was wearing a cute mint green sundress and brown sandals.

“You look cute, Zoe,” Luke complimented her. “You should wear that dress more often; it suits you in color.”

Zoe blushed at her date’s compliment. “Well… I got called a fatso at school because I’m pregnant.”

Luke dropped his jaw. “Who says that?!”

“The girl my ex cheated on me with. I’m not one to drop names, but she’s been my arch-nemesis since grade school.”

Zoe and Luke linked arms as he led her out to the car. “She sounds like a bitch for sure! She needs to have her eyes checked; isn’t it what’s on the inside that’s more important, anyway?”

“True.”

“Have her back by midnight, Luke!” Mr. Olson called after them.

“I will sir; thank you!” Luke called back as he opened the car door for Zoe.

Chapter 4: Date With a Rockstar

“Before we left, you mentioned you were pregnant,” Luke prompted Zoe over a dinner meal of shrimp scampi for him and fried scallops for her.

“Yeah, about 37 weeks,” Zoe said. “It’s a surprise gender, but if it’s a girl, I’m naming her Collins.”

Luke raised his eyebrows. “Collins?” he repeated. “I’ve never heard that as a first name before.”

“Yeah, it is pretty rare, but it’s after my favorite teacher, and I wanted the name to be rare, anyway, since mine and my ex’s names are pretty common.”

“Ah, that makes sense. What about for a boy?”

“I was just going to name him MJ after my ex’s name, but obviously, we’re exes now. I just really hope it’s a girl just so I won’t have to think about boy names; I’ve really been struggling with those names.”

“Well, if we ever get to having sex and conceive a boy in the future, I’ve got some names.”

Zoe laughed. “You’re assuming we’re going to hit it off.”

“Well… be honest, what do you think so far?” Luke asked, leaning forward in anticipation.

“I think you suck so far.” Luke froze, and Zoe let out a cute laugh. “I’m being sarcastic. I didn’t stare at you during the concert, call your number, and accept a date proposal for nothing!”

Luke then had a moment of high hope. He’d been rejected so many times that he wasn’t sure this date would work out, either.

“So… you like me? Like, like me, like me?”

Zoe smirked. “I like you enough to go out with you. I’ll decide at the end of the date if I want to see you again.”

Luke shook his head to come back to reality. “Sorry. It’s just that this is the farthest I’ve come with any date in the history of me dating.”

Zoe leaned in, eager to sip Luke’s hot tea. “Do tell!”

“Yeah… they either wouldn’t fall for my pickup lines, turned out to be lesbian, left mid-date because I said something they didn’t like, or their dads wouldn’t let us date. You’re obviously not lesbian, you’re still here, and your dad seems like a nice fella.”

“He is. He’s not a fan of being a young grandpa – he’s only early forties – but he’s supportive of whomever I date.”

“That’s good.” Luke wiped his mouth and declared that he’d finished his meal.

“I am, too,” Zoe said just as their waiter came back.

“Can you bring us the check, please?” Luke asked. “I’m paying tonight.”

“Of course, sir,” he said. “I’ll be right back with that check.”

He came back and handed the check to Luke, and just as Luke was figuring out a tip, Zoe felt a contraction.

“Ooh,” she groaned. “I just felt a contraction!”

Luke’s ocean blue eyes widened. “How long have you been having these? How far apart are they?”

“Since this afternoon, but I wanted to go ahead with the date because, you know, who in their right mind would pass up a date with a celebrity?”

“Well, we do need to head to our next city in the morning… but I would’ve been more than happy to do it virtually!” Luke watched as Zoe had another moment of discomfort. “Was that another contraction?!”

“It’s just uncomfortable because it keeps pushing on my vagina!” Zoe complained. “I just…”

She was about to continue with “want to go ahead with our date”, but Luke cut her off because he saw water leaking to the floor. “Zoe, your water broke – I need to get you to the hospital.”

“But our date!” Zoe protested. “I was really looking forward to the sunset!”

“Family comes first, mate. Come on… upsy-daisy!”

Luke carried Zoe out to his car and put her in the front seat. After he buckled her in and shut the door, Luke jumped into the driver’s seat and started the half-hour drive to the hospital, for which Zoe gave him the address to put in the GPS. On the way there, as requested by Zoe, he called Daniel to let him know his sister was in labor.

Chapter 5

“It’s a girl!” Dr. Kane announced as he pulled the baby the rest of the way out of Zoe’s vagina. “Congratulations, Zoe!”

It was now the next morning at sunrise. Zoe’s labor had taken all of nine hours to get to this point, but she’d only had to push seven times in the span of two minutes because of the baby’s small-end-of-normal size. The only complication had been that the baby was breech, but the doctor and nurses had successfully flipped it over so that Zoe could have the vaginal birth she’d dreamed of.

“Thank you,” Zoe said, reaching out to take her in her arms. “Hi, sweet girl! I’m your mama!”

“Does she still look like a Collins?” Daniel asked after he took a picture with his phone.

Zoe stared at her newborn daughter, whose cries had now died down to a whimper. She had blonde hair like Zoe, a cute button nose, quivering lips, and plump cheeks. She didn’t look one bit like she should have a unisex name like Collins; she was all-girl. But what name is similar to Collins? Zoe asked herself.

“No, not really,” Zoe admitted. “I had my heart set on that name, though, because of that teacher.”

“Well, how about Adeline after your Aunt Ada?” Mrs. Olson suggested. “I know she’s your favorite aunt, and she’ll be absolutely floored to have a great-niece named after her.”

“Yeah, she is my favorite aunt,” Zoe recalled, “but I want something prettier. To me, Adeline is an old lady’s name.”

“Aurora?” Mr. Olson suggested. “It means dawn, and since that’s the time of day she was born, it would be fitting.”

“And imagine the time when you’ll teach her to say her name,” Daniel added. “It’ll be easy as pie!”

“And don’t forget Sleeping Beauty – her name is Aurora, too!” Julia chimed in.

“Okay, okay,” Zoe said. “The more y’all talk about Aurora, the more I love it. Aurora Margaret Thorburn it is, then.”

“My daughter’s name is Aurora as well,” the delivery nurse said. “She’ll be thrilled when she finds out I helped deliver another Aurora! Why don’t you get some sleep while we do her tests? You’ve had a long night.”

Zoe was horrified at this. “W-what tests?” she almost whispered. “Is she not healthy?”

Dr. Kane laughed. “No, she’s fine! It’s just a routine thing we do with newborns; nothing to worry about. It’s just to make absolutely sure there’s nothing wrong inside. You know what I mean?”

Zoe nodded. “Yeah, I think so. How long do they take?”

“Just a few minutes,” the nurse answered. “She’ll be back in your arms before you know it!”

Zoe reluctantly handed Rori over. “Okay, if you say so.”

When the delivery staff left the family alone, Daniel told Zoe he’d sent the picture he took to her phone.

“Thank you,” Zoe said with a kiss on the cheek. She opened her messenger app to forward the image to Luke, along with the caption, “She’s here!”

Zoe then tried to go to sleep, but she couldn’t get Rori off her mind. Twenty minutes after she laid back, she sat back up just in time for the nurse to come back with Rori in her bassinet.

“She’s back, Mama!” she said cheerfully. “I told you it wouldn’t take long!”

“Well, it was the longest 20 minutes of my life,” Zoe said. “How is she, though?”

“She’s great! She passed all her tests. We just tested her for jaundice, hearing, and a few others. She is a little on the tiny side at six pounds and seventeen inches, but she’s still within normal range for weight and length.”

“That’s cool! So, when do I start breastfeeding?”

“Your milk should come in within a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, you can bottle-feed her with colostrum – it’s almost like breastmilk, but a little different.”

“I see. Thanks for the tip.”

“You’re quite welcome!”

When he woke up in the hotel room at eight, Luke noticed he had a text from Zoe, who had apparently had her baby at around six. He smiled at the tiny infant lying on Zoe’s bare chest. He would’ve texted her back, but he felt the need to call her instead so he could hear that beautiful accent of hers.

“Hello?” Zoe answered, warming his heart.

“Hey, it’s Luke,” he said. “I heard you had your baby!”

“Yeah, her name is Aurora Margaret Thorburn, but I’m going to call her Rori for short.”

“How adorable! She looks like she should be called Aurora.”

Luke then started to sing the chorus of a song from “Sleeping Beauty”, making her laugh.

“Well, that was one reason – ‘Sleeping Beauty’ was my favorite Disney movie… but I also named her that because she was born at dawn.”

“Well, that’s awfully sweet. So, we have to be in Columbus by three this afternoon, but that’s only a four-hour drive. Do you mind if we visit you before we leave?”

“Oh, not at all! I really enjoyed your company last night, and I’d love to see you again.”

“Me too… well, obviously, because we’re on the phone.” Luke chuckled at his own wittiness.

“You’re funny,” Zoe said after she giggled as well. “I’ll see you in like an hour?”

“Yeah, that sounds about right.”

Chapter 6: Right Place, Wrong Time

Just as Zoe ended the call, there was a knock at the door.

“Who is it?” Zoe called out.

“It’s Marcus!” the guy behind the door called back. Then, without permission, Marcus opened the door and entered Zoe’s hospital room.

“How the fudge did you find me out?!” Zoe demanded. “I thought I told you to stay out of my life!”

“Your dad called me. And besides, I broke up with Cassie because I miss you.”

Zoe folded her arms. “Well, I don’t care! I’ve also met someone new already. Now, get out!”

“Honey, please let him back into your life,” Mr. Olson begged. “I know you have Luke now, but Marcus was so good to you! I want the two of you to get back together.”

“No! He’s a two-timing son of a biscuit!”

“Maybe this will change your mind,” Marcus said, leaning in for a kiss on the lips. Before Zoe could stop herself, she gave into the taste of Marcus’ lips on hers. They were to the point of making out, tongues out and all, when Zoe suddenly heard Luke clearing his throat.

“So…” Luke said suspiciously. “I see you lied about being single.”

Zoe pushed Marcus away and stared at Luke like a deer in the headlights. “What the hell are you talking about?! He IS my ex!”

“Then how come you were just making out with him?” Luke asked, audibly hurt. “You can forget about seeing me again. This acquaintance is over!”

Luke stormed out of the room, his friends chasing after him.

“So, I take it you’ve changed your mind?” Marcus asked smugly.

Zoe was seething with anger now. Anger at Luke “dumping” her and anger at Marcus for making her kiss him.

“Get out and never come back, bastard!” she barked.

“Can I at least see the—”

“NO! JUST LEAVE ME BE BEFORE I CALL THE COPS!”

“Alright, alright!” Marcus gave in as he backed away slowly. Then, he walked out, but not before muttering, “Miss Priss.”

“I heard that!” Zoe called after him.

Meanwhile, Luke was crying over Zoe outside the hospital when he heard Michael shout, “There you are! What’s wrong?”

Luke looked up to meet Michael’s gaze. “I thought Zoe and I had potential!” he sobbed. “I did everything I could in hopes to keep her around, and she never broke up with that stupid boyfriend of hers!”

Ashton shook his head. “You don’t need a girl who just plays with your heart like that. In fact, why don’t we go clubbing after our gig tonight and find you a new girl. We’ll make damn sure to find you one who will stay.”

Luke dried his eyes with his jacket. “That sounds like a wonderful idea. I’m looking forward to it already!”

The club they went to wasn’t far from the concert venue in Columbus. When they were granted entry, the four guys went straight to the bar and ordered their drinks.

Later, Luke was sipping his whiskey when he sensed a presence in the barstool next to him. He looked right to make eye contact with a gorgeous girl, even more so than Zoe. She was tall, thin, and voluptuous with curly auburn hair down past her shoulders. Her green eyes glistened in the neon lights, and her lips were nice and plump.

“Oh, hello,” Luke flirted with the girl. “I’m Luke Hemmings.”

“I’m Hayley,” she said, raising her voice so he could hear her over the loud music and noise. “Hayley Church. It’s nice to meet you!”

“You, too! I think we should go somewhere quieter. It’s way too loud in here!”

“I agree; let’s go!”

Luke and Hayley snuck out the back door and settled against the brick building.

“I love your accent, by the way,” Hayley complimented Luke to break the ice. “What part of England are you from?”

“I’m actually from Australia,” he corrected her. “I’m from a suburb of Sydney called Riverstone. What about you?”

“I’m from Wausau, Wisconsin, but I moved here in seventh grade.”

“Which explains your own accent. I love it!”

“Thank you. What brings you to Columbus?”

“My bandmates and I just finished a gig, opening for One Direction.”

“Oh, cool! I love a guy in a band. What do you do?”

“I’m the lead vocalist. There are four of us in the band; we have a lead guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer… and then, of course, there’s me.”

“Ooh, that’s hot,” Hayley purred. “I’ve always wanted to be with a musician, and now is my chance! You know what, let’s skip romance and have sex.”

Luke grinned to show his excitement. “That sounds marvelous.”

Zoe was sent home the next morning, and as soon as she got home, she spotted Marcus’ car in the driveway.

“You again?!” Zoe screamed as she climbed out.

“Yes, me again,” Marcus replied. “I came to get you back once and for all!”

“What?! What the hell are you talking about?”

Marcus punched his ex in the face, causing her to fall to the ground. That was the last thing Zoe remembered before she fell unconscious.

Chapter 7:

Zoe came around when she heard a door slam shut. The noise gave her a major headache, and she groaned to show her displeasure.

While Zoe had been unconscious, Mr. Olson had had Marcus arrested for assault and called an ambulance for her.

“Don’t move, Zoe Bear,” Mr. Olson said, caressing her right arm. “You had a concussion.”

“Can you tell us the date today, miss?” a paramedic asked.

“June 18th, 2013,” Zoe said.

“Very good. Now, how many fingers am I holding up?” He showed her three fingers.

“Ugh… three. Now, stop trying to insult my intelligence!”

“They’re not, darling,” Mr. Olson said. “They’re just trying to see how big a concussion you had. They always do this with patients who have just come out of comas.”

At the hospital, Zoe had a CAT scan done on her head, and thankfully, the concussion was only minor. She did have a gash in her skull that needed seven stitches to fix, but she was sent home the same day with a prescription of painkillers and plenty of R&R.

Luke was still in bed with Hayley when he suddenly heard his phone ring. He sighed, sat up, and grudgingly answered the phone.

“Who’s this? You just woke me up.”

“It’s her brother, Daniel,” a male voice said on the other line.

“And just what are you calling for?! This is an unsolicited call!”

Daniel sighed. “Luke, Zoe was assaulted when we were coming home with the baby. She’s back at the hospital now.”

“What happened?” Luke asked, more for conversation’s sake than out of concern

“I’m sure she’ll be fine… but she had some kind of concussion and a gash in her skull from her fall. It was her ex’s doing, and he was just arrested for the assault.”

Luke froze. “Surely, you don’t mean the bloke I caught Zoe kissing yesterday! I thought they were still dating, because she was full-on making out with him!”

“I do, actually. You shouldn’t have been so quick to judge, man. She’s single as a Pringle.”

“Well, then how come she was so into that kiss?”

“She told me the feeling was only temporary. She regretted it pretty much as soon as she kicked him out.”

Choosing not to believe Daniel’s words, Luke immediately ended the call and put his phone on silent. He’d rather have heard it from the horse’s mouth.

“Who was that, Luke?” Hayley purred. “And who’s this Zoe?”

“She’s just an ex,” Luke lied. “That relationship ended before it even started; don’t worry. So, how was it, having sex with a bloke like me?”

“It was fantastic! I don’t know how my dad would feel about us dating, though, especially since it started with sex.”

Luke raised his eyebrows in confusion. “Wait a bloody minute… you didn’t feel that way last night. You said, and I quote—”

Hayley cut him off. “I know… but I didn’t tell you my dad wanted me home by midnight. I’m only fifteen, you know.”

Luke was fuming now. “You lied about your age, too! Get out of my bed and out of my life, psychopath!”

“I didn’t even tell you, my age!”

“We met at the club, and they have an age minimum of sixteen – I assumed you were at least above the age of consent, since you were clearly old enough to go clubbing. GET OUT RIGHT NOW!”

“I got in with a fake ID… but it’s okay. At least I can say I had sex with a celebrity! I’ll see you in nine months.”

With that, Hayley put her clothes on and stormed out of the room.

“Yeah, well, tell the devil I said hello when you get back home!”

“I HEARD THAT!”

Luke covered his face with his pillow and screamed into it in complete and utter lividness. He couldn’t believe a girl would lie like that just to get into her idol’s jeans. He had never felt so used in his life. He did this until he heard a knock at the door.

“Who is it?” he asked.

“It’s me, Ashton! Open the door!”

Luke sighed, got up, covered himself with a towel, and let Ashton in.

“I heard you screaming, mate. Is something wrong? Where’s Hayley?”

“If I said it didn’t work out, it would be a deep, bloody understatement!” Luke snapped. “She fucking used me for sex!”

Ashton laughed at this. “See, Zoe is much better for you, Luke. As much as I’m glad you’ve moved on, I’m starting to miss her.”

“Are you saying I actually downgraded with Hayley?”

“Well, think about this. When you met Zoe, the first thing you did with her was to ask her out. The first thing you did with Hayley was to have sex. When a girl asks for sex before a date, that’s usually a red flag that you’re about to get used. I and the other fellas didn’t get one bad vibe about Zoe.”

Luke sighed. “I’ll call her once we’re on the road.”

Chapter 8

Zoe was doing a crossword on her phone while Rory-Mae slept next to her when it rang. By reflex, she answered and gave her usual greeting.

“Hey there, Zoe Bear,” Luke greeted her back. “I’m sorry about yesterday. I shouldn’t have jumped to such a conclusion like you were still with your ex. Was the feeling of wanting him really only temporary?”

“It’s true, it was. I regretted it as soon as he left, and I felt bad the rest of the day. I’m sorry I kissed him.”

“You’re forgiven, Zoe. In fact, let me make it up to you – how would you like to join us on tour?”

“Oh, I should be making it up to you… but I’d love to! Then, we can be together even longer! Maybe I’ll meet you in Atlanta or Raleigh – that should give me time to pack everything.”

“Exactly! Good thinking about Raleigh. I wouldn’t want to rush you.”

Zoe was able to book a nonstop flight to Raleigh for that Saturday morning at six. It would only be a two-hour flight, so she’d have time to get a bite to eat before meeting up with the guys.

“Have fun, honey,” Mrs. Olson said at the airport. “You did pack enough things for Rory-Mae, right? Diapers, wipes, burp cloths… that stuff.”

Zoe rolled her eyes at her mother. “Mom, please – I’ve got this!” she argued.

“You’ve got a nursing cover for when you breastfeed, too, right? I don’t want to hear anything about dirty looks.”

“MOM!”

“Hey, just saying!”

Zoe’s flight started boarding, and she and Mrs. Olson shared a final hug.

“Bye, Mom,” Zoe said before she kissed Mrs. Olson on the cheek.

When she got to her row on the plane, Zoe was shocked to see Cassie on her side of the aisle. She held her breath as she looked at her boarding pass to see which seat was hers. Then, she let out an unintentional groan of disgust when she realized she was seated right next to Cassie.

“What’s wrong?” Cassie asked, surprisingly not in an obnoxious manner.

“Are you sure you’re in the right seat? My boarding pass says I’m sitting next to you.”

“Ma’am, you’re holding up the line,” a flight attendant informed Zoe. “Please be seated.”

“Um… is there any way I can switch seats with someone? I…” Zoe thought to say she was enemies with the girl in her row, but then she thought better of it. “That girl and I don’t get along very well.”

“No, there’s no switching allowed on this flight. Please be seated.” She said the last part more sternly than last time.

Zoe sighed and slumped down in the seat next to Cassie.

“So… what brings you aboard this flight, Zoe?” Cassie asked nicely, surprising Zoe. She never addressed her by her first name at school. She was always “Olson” to her.

“Wait – you did not just call me Zoe!”

Cassie giggled. “Yeah, I’ve started therapy this summer to help me get over my bad ways. It’s working so far, I think. So, why Raleigh?”

“I’m meeting a new acquaintance there,” Zoe replied. “His name is Luke.”

“Cool! My family and I are actually moving to New York; Raleigh is our connecting flight. Tell me about this Luke! Is he cute?”

Zoe blushed. “Yeah, you could say that. We’ve already been on our first date.”

“Oh, how did that go?”

“It went pretty well. He was such a gentleman the entire time. I did go into labor after the meal, but he took me to the hospital and called my parents and brother.”

“Oh, I do see you had the baby! Boy or girl?”

“It’s a girl. I named her Aurora, but I call her Rory-Mae almost exclusively.”

“That’s a cute name!”

“Yeah, thanks.”

Luke and the guys were waiting at Zoe’s gate when Zoe appeared from the terminal with Rory-Mae in tow.

“Hey there, Zoe Bear,” Luke greeted her with a hug. “How was the flight?”

“It was good,” Zoe said. “I made amends with the girl Marcus had cheated on me with, and we’re friends now.”

“Ah, the girl who called you a fatso just because you were pregnant?”

“Yeah, that’s the one. Her name is Cassie.”

“Holy crap!” Zoe heard Cassie exclaim. “Luke Hemmings, 5SOS, Luke Hemmings?! Girl, when did you meet them?”

“About a week ago when they were performing in Louisville.”

“Ooh, can I get a picture with y’all?”

“Sure,” Luke said.

“Cassandra!” Mr. Craig called out. “Come on! The next plane is boarding!”

“Just a minute, Dad!” Cassie yelled back. Then, she had Zoe take the picture on her phone.

“Cassandra, there’s not a lot of time to waste!” Mrs. Craig prodded just as Zoe gave the phone back. “Hug your friend goodbye and come on!”

Cassie sighed. “I guess I’d better join them,” Cassie said to Zoe. “I’ll give you a friend request on Facebook when we get to New York.”

“That sounds good. I’ll be looking out for it.”

hahaha that'as exactly what I was going for! A little comic relief while L and Z are apart for a bit.
