DO NOT GET POLITICAL

why should our political views change what interests we have? Why can't I, a conservative, be shunned for liking musical theater???

i think a lot of people tend to be interested in things that align with their views, we live in a capitalistic society so there's always someone getting the coin when someone is interested in something and the majority of people wouldn't want that to be someone who doesn't believe in basic human rights for example. i wouldn't attack people for liking something, but as a lesbian i also wouldn't want someone who's actively homophobic to profit off my interest in their work. as for convervatives liking liberal media, from what i've seen conservatives are loud about their dislike of such things like that dude destroying a taylor swift themed guitar following her endorsement of kamala, so it's no wonder people are surprised - but you do you and it's no one's business what your interests are.

I think eclipsoul answered it well
Of course you can enjoy it, no one can stop you lmao but it's always going to seem strange when you indulge in something that the majority of fans are of a different demographic than you (whether that's political or not)
For instance, I think it's strange how many Xiu Xiu fans are moderate/centrist/conservative when the band is openly queer, political, and very far left, but I can't stop them from liking it :pikasmart:

I'm not actively homophobic 🥲 sure, i don't support it, but that won't change how i view the person or how i treat them.
I just like musicals... And i want to be myself and not be shunned for it

Well, inclusivity is a liberal ideal
It's kind of funny to me that you didn't know, considering theatre fans being queer is a common trope/occurrence

Ohhh and yet these people on insta aren't inclusive
I'm more of a modern conservative. I still stick by morals but I'm more open and welcoming and accepting
Are non queer theater fans common though?

Common enough
I'm not friends with any musical enthusiasts, so I wouldn't know

I just saw an article while googling this topic
It said that liberals tend to be more emotional thinkers.... Can't that be the same for conservatives?
I feel like these stereotypes are kinda unfair....

That depends on how you define that. I'd prefer not to talk about this further
And duh, that's kind of how stereotypes work

i know you said not to get political, but i think politics is what makes this happen so i have to bring it up; feel free to skip this if it makes you feel uncomfortable or if you dont feel like replying
i think that conservatives aren't considered "emotional" thinkers because of Trump (and republicans)'s views on minorities and people who are constantly discriminated as opposed to liberals ! most republicans or conservatives (not all; just the majority) don't seem to care about the emotions of us latinos, of queer people or black people when they constantly discriminate against us and believe we should stay away from their country simply because of our race, ethnicity or sexuality
one of the biggest or at least most popular points that liberals have is the advocation for minorities and their rights which is why theyre seen as the emotional thinkers in this situation :pepeheart:

a lot of people are surprised you are into hazbin hotel while being conservative because hazbin hotel is full of and known for their queer representation and fandom so it's shocking to see someone of an opposing background consuming and enjoying the media
correct me if im wrong on anything :)

no worries, i didn't say you were actively homophobic - but sadly there are people working in creative industries who are which is why for certain people political views are a deal breaker when it comes to liking something. and also i mean queer people also want to be themselves without being shunned for it, so in a way the thing you want to be is the same thing that you don't support. eitherway you seem very young so your views can still change with time and even if they don't, there's no one who can stop you from enjoying musical theatre even if the idea of a conservative person being into that seems bizarre to them.

Ohhh i see. I don't support lgbtq+ but i still resoect that that's what they want to do and it wont change my vuew of the person, they derserve the same resoect as everyone else. I have nothing against any race. Hell, my soon to be sister in law is Latina. I view everybody the same and show them thw same respect.
I keep my morals straight with the conservative side but i appreciate a lot of media that's more open to talk about certain things even though i may or may not support it.
I go my morals while also appreciating these works

My apologies in advance if I word things wrong or don't approach this as tactfully as I should. I'll try to avoid politics too much, but I know the exact feeling you have, or I think I do anyway. I grew up in a conservative environment, but nowadays I think I'm somewhere in the middle (haven't figured out my exact label, like if I want to use centrist, moderate, independent, ect). I'm don't consider myself to be racist, misogynistic, homophobic or anything like that though, just in case it needs to be said. I have had several interests that are more liberal-coded or tend to have fanbases with minorities (K-Pop, certain TV shows, animation, ect). Sometimes when people find out about my political beliefs, we can agree to disagree (or, very rarely, we might actually agree), but sometimes they become surprised and wonder how I can enjoy the things I do with what my political views are, or, in some cases, how I can be so messed up or possibly believe X or Y and so on.

I'll say that your political beliefs are a part of you, but it's your choice whether you leave it as just a part of you or if you make them define you, if that distinction makes sense. There's no right or wrong answer, just whatever you feel is right. Your opinions may change over time or they might not, and either way it's okay. It's completely fine to like something even if most of the fan base disagrees with how you think. I'd be careful being vocal about it unless you have a thick skin though, because sometimes people assume your political beliefs based on your interests, and if they're wrong, despite you not doing anything wrong, they may feel hurt, angry, confused or betrayed and lash out at you as a result. I'm not trying to say to never speak up about political beliefs ever, but to be careful so you don't get hurt (emotionally, or physically if it's in person).

1. a person's political views informs the rest of us about their character and I judge a person by their character whether it be friendship, relationship, etc etc

2. going on from 1. if a person chooses to associate with people that I don't agree with then it's natural for one to claim that that I do not support or may not want to be associated with that person. For example let's take kpop - If a person knows what Seungri or Taeil did or even what was alleged to happened and still chooses to be their fan then that is a reflection of the type of person (ie. character of that person) and may get judged based on that.

3. you cannot start a discussion about politics and the first thing you write is "do not get political" - with all due respect OP that's a bad faith premise

4. I'd like to hear your definition and your understanding and your views to determine what you mean by CONSERVATIVE before giving an actual answer about the situation since conservative might be many different things

This is coming from someone who's into a bit of musical theatre. The arts and especially the stage has always been a safe space for marginalised people, from ethnic groups to the queer community. For a conservative to be in a space like this isn't invalid, it's just surprising because of the theatre's very gay history.

My thoughts too. To decide what is and isn't political is inherently political.

what i mean by not getting political is saying good or bad about trump or harris. i really don't want people talking about them on here bc i don't want to possibly get in trouble so i'm trying to avoid that topic, but talking abt the less political but still political topics is what i'm asking abt. I'm sorry

i guess i'm in the middle too but my morals and beliefs are still mainly conservative. a good amount of my interests are largely liberal based.
