Could date someone with a different political view than you? (1 Viewer)

I understand that I might not agree with everything someone believes in. But I could not imagine being with someone who would vote directly against my rights. This was inspired by a TikTok I saw of a married couple who voted differently in the most recent presidential election.​

Yeah. I can and have done it before-the person I was with and I are still really good friends and we debate all the time. I love it. Then we cuddle and go about our day. We might be getting back together soon but we have very different positions, but we understand that the other is just voting in regards to what is most important to them.

It makes our conversations really eye-opening and keeps me from sitting in an echo chamber. Something I greatly appreciate.

Literally my parents. They voted differently. They even practice two different religions.
My parents align on some views but differ in others. There's no one party that perfectly fits either and seeing them still kiss each other at the end of a (vomiting in a corner) I can see it being possible.

Just not for me. There are a few things I won't budge on if they don't align with mine.

You can find all kinds of people supporting all kinds of political parties. If they’re someone who’s hateful, discriminatory, and or against other core beliefs of mine, then I couldn't. But that wouldn’t be related to the political party they support, that would be related to those behaviors and the kind of person they are. And it would apply to anyone of any political affiliation, whether it’s the same as mine or not.

It's why I find it so sad that people cut off others due to this stuff. Especially if you know that person is actually a good person. If you have a discussion with them and ask them why-I am sure they can give you an answer that will just solidify your original view of them. That they are a good person at heart, not hateful. And not suddenly other due to a difference of opinion.

I feel like the us vs them mentality has gotten so strong with politics and it’s really disappointing. The people who most want to to adopt that mentality are probably the politicians, so they can get your loyal and many times unquestioning support. Easier than coming up with good ideas as to how to run the country. It’s frustrating because there’s two main political parties, but millions of people with unique mindsets and beliefs. And 2 political parties are supposed to perfectly categorize them all?

Thousand percent couldn't agree more. You nailed it. I am an independent because I don't fully align with either side and it's ignorant to think anyone is going to a thousand percent agree with one versus the other. People are nuanced, so the two-political parties do not accurately represent the population and it's sad that it's become so divisive. Unfortunately, it's led to less conversations and less understanding, and more assumptions.

gotta remember dating most of the time is to get to know someone - how often do you know of another's political beliefs prior to dating them??? (unless one was friends of that person beforehand)

long term relationship wise - as with most things it's about respect and even though one's partner might have differing opinions can you respect each other

i mean, i could date people with different views than me. in fact i don't think i agree with anyone on everything - even the people i tend to politically agree with, we often agree on our general positions but have different ideas on solving problems. however if this person supports policies, ideologies, or politicians that i find hateful and discriminatory, i would not date them
