Since we're getting into that season: Elf on the Shelf.

When I was a kid, we didn't need to give money to a corporation to have an elf monitor us for Santa. I guess kudos to the person who saw an opportunity to make themselves rich, but I genuinely do not get why so many people decided, "Ah, yes, I must spend $32 (+ accessories) and assign myself a daily chore for the month of December."

SAME. I sort of get it if you need a quick reference picture for, say, a TTRPG, and it's not being used for anything else.

I really don't get it when it's being used for something professional (like to accompany a news article) or can easily be captured with actual photography or by a professional artist (I saw one today of the hosts of GBBO... they surely have hundreds of pictures that exist that could have been used????)

AI art. If you need a picture with a particular criterion, Google is sitting right there. RIGHT. THERE! Just search up "blonde hair green eyes" or what have you! there are TONS of actual pics floating around!

And furthermore, is it really art if it's artificially generated? We have the right side of our brain for a fucking REASON! USE IT! I understand things like name, place, or thing generators, but that's the ONLY exception.

I feel this way about some books too. I just finished a book that won a scifi competition, and I can only conclude that it must have been voted by people who don't actually read scifi, because the science was hot garbage in it.

It's really fascinating (in a sad way) how many people leave school without being able to understand something they read or to think about things. Like in one ear and immediately trashed in the brain.

I've really realized that since joining a book club. There are some people who read hundreds of books, and yet, if there's a plot more complicated than a very basic "hero goes from point A to point B" then it's "too complicated" and they don't like it.

I have friends in computer science who use it which is ironic.
