The idea is that they hide the pickle, and whoever finds it first gets to open the first present on Christmas morning it blends in because it’s green. Interestingly, it’s never been a common German tradition, only small pockets of Germany ever had this tradition. But immigrants from Germany to the US and Canada probably all do it often.
