I can't respect a language that doesn't pronounce half then letters in a word but expects you to spell them.

But but but if you’re speaking in present tense and forget the conjugation for singular you vs he/she, then you don’t have to worry because they sound the same despite being spelled differently Also ngl the silent letters are annoying, but sometimes less annoying than having to guess which sound the letters are supposed to make because they have multiple options. With French you can just play it safe and not pronounce them and you’re probably right

The above from Bilbo's speech in Lord of The Rings the fellowship of the ring(book version, idr if in film) still has me discombobulated especially or maybe only the 2nd part, tho no double negatives in it I think.

There's also a sentence in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 4th book which I can't rmbr n my copy is lost: but it's awesome.

So if u r a master of language, I think attempting double negatives is okay(but make sure it works maybe? Otherwise don't try it?)

Yeah Bilbos quite isn’t the most common structure but it’s not a double negative. But it does take a second to process the meaning, which I think is what Tolkien was going for, since the portrayal of Bilbo was of a hobbit that had an appreciation for art and eloquence that other hobbits didn’t. Double negatives in art forms would make sense at times too, art often goes against set rules and is more experimental for a variety of reasons. It’s why it can be so interesting and unique sometimes

Spanish uses double negatives: "no tenemos nada" = "we don't have anything"

I actually never noticed that, but you are right. It doesn’t feel like it occurs nearly as much as Russian, but it definitely exists.

The languages I talk about don’t use them that way. They use many negatives to show the sentence is overall negative, regardless of whether there’s an even or odd number of negatives

It seems like a lot of languages with similar linguistic backgrounds to Icelandic have it or used to have it to some capacity. There are other languages with similar backgrounds that still have it (Scots, Faroese, some Low German dialects).

Probably, the Faroe Islands are in the area historically associated with Vikings. That said, the English language has Viking influence too, and it became single negative only. But the change to dropping the negative concord only happened after there was no influence anymore, so it was unrelated.
