When is a boycott of a kpop group “too much”? (3 Viewers)

Since the Loona boycott, I have noticed that many kpop fans are calling for boycotts against other groups: some called for and some uncalled for.

Loona and Madein are/were boycotted to free them from abusive companies. New Jeans too, I think? People boycotted Le Serrafim because they danced in front of a Church. Some people boycotted Fifty Fifty after the lineup change, there was conflicting information so many people were divided. And now I just saw a thing about how people want to boycott BadVillian because one of the members posted a dance video where one of the members was seen wearing a shirt with Arabic writing (I think it said Allah on it??). So, when does boycotting get to be “too much” or were all these boycotts justified? Please keep it civilized in the comments below 👇​

Well technically I would have a problem too, Allah is not a fashion statement. BUT, but she doesn't know Arabic, it most likely was in Arabic.. My problem would be with the designer because I'm pretty sure they know EXACTLY what the Name means when they put it on the shirt. They should boycott the brand not her.

I definitely agree that it is not a fashion statement and she should not have worn it. That does make me wonder why designers make clothing like this. This isn’t the first time an idol has worn something that isn’t appropriate either. I totally see your point and agree.

All their most recent TikTok videos are posted with people saying to boycott them but I don’t know how many people actually will.

just as anybody and everybody is free to defend anybody else

everybody has free will to do whatever the F they want
if the question is whether the boycott is justified or not then it becomes subjective no?

I can choose to not patronise a local restaurant (ie. boycott) maybe because it provided bad service - that is a seemly justified reason
people have chose not to purchase Israeli goods and services because of their perceived reasoning - justified?
people have chosen not to purchase from companies have ties to Israel - justified?

at the end of the day people can boycott/defend whoever the F they want and if enough people do it - well that's just democracy for ya no?

It definitely seems more personal than other apologies that have been issued for similar situations in the past. Hopefully people continue holding her (and other artists) accountable rather than boycotting

Instead of a statement from the company with a handwritten apology we got it straight from the source, if issues were handled like this more often there wouldn’t be so much hate

I agree! Companies tend to downplay what happened instead of actually apologizing, which makes the situations at hand worse than they already were. If an artist issues his or her own apology, then it sounds more genuine.

I feel like a boycott is too much when people get caught up with participating in a boycott as being, like, a personality trait, ignoring any facts that have to do with the situation, and generally looking to CAUSE harm, rather than prevent it.

Like when people are boycotting one group because they're mad at the company and they go harass other idols for talking to members of said group. Or, for a non-kpop example, when a union asks for support in a boycott, and people take it too far, it actually diminishes the union's ability to show that they can get ramping up support, and it's possible to actually cause harm to the people you're looking to support because they may be depending on revenue streams through one source they haven't asked you to stop supporting.

Yes exactly. I would say this about almost any other group. They likely created friendships so of course they should be allowed to support those they care about without fans screaming obscenities at them

i mean, technically never? by definition, boycotting is refusing to consume something or engage with it so i don't think there is a level of "too much" boycott as that wouldn't be simple boycott anymore and just bullying, tbh i hate when stans do that because it gives a bad image to those who boycott something for a genuine reason. other than that, i agree with what @Selfmate said that everyone's free to boycott whatever they want. for example it's not a kpop group but i boycotted auchan when they chose to remain in the russian market after their invasion of ukraine. after all, an organized boycott is probably the most successful way of showing that you disagree with something a corporate entity does or stands for in a capitalist industry like kpop/entertainment.
