If the world was spherical they would actually be right because then any place could be the center. Unfortunately it isn’t But that reminds me a bit of something that’s similar but no longer correct, namely the Midwest USA. Much of the Midwest is now in the eastern US, but it used to be west before the actual west was taken

It’s close, but the slight non spherical ness means that locations are just a tiny bit not evenly spaced throughout on all sides, so it wouldn’t be technically in the middle

If you really wanted to parse out the chinese names for their places, you'd find it very literal lmao.

For example Nanjing and Beijing were both capitals of the Ming dynasty (Nanjing in the first half and Beijing in the second half) and so one was more southern than the other so Nanjing is "Southern Capital" and Beijing is "Northern Capital" (what's even more funny is that the ROC had their presidential palace (eq. to the white house) in Nanjing before being overrun and the PRC set up shop in Beijing lol.
