Including both arrests and citations. Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president, was given a citation in 1872 for speeding on his horse drawn carriage. He remains the only president definitively arrested or cited while in office, but one other president, Franklin Pierce, may have been arrested as well. The claim is that in 1853, Pierce was arrested for running over a woman with his horse, but that the charges were dropped due to lack of evidence. However, this story is thought to be made up due to lack of evidence, particularly as he was one of the unpopular pre civil war presidents. Other US presidents have been arrested or fined before or after presidency, or definitely broke laws, including but not limited to the following:
Before
Definitely broke laws (just a few)
Before
- George W. Bush received a DUI in 1976.
- Trump
- Grant again, for speeding again
Definitely broke laws (just a few)
- Andrew Jackson killed at least one person (in a duel), and also assaulted multiple people
- Nixon, but he got pardoned
- Bill Clinton, but he reached an agreement which forbade him from practicing law for a set time, in exchange for the other party not filing criminal charges against him
