judgment and I'm American. The alternative is not the dictionary correct spelling.:susPepe:
What if we want to channel our inner Brit? :uwu: This thread has just confused me more though. The divide seems to be random and not based on American or not from this limited data. I personally feel like judgment looks incredibly wrong, and like I’ve never seen anyone use it which is why the theoretical American vs not divide confused me :lisalaugh:

Yeah, I'm wondering if the divide is more "how have you seen it more frequently" than anything, unlike, say, gray vs grey.

American English hates the letter "e" and has an obsession with the letter "z" (e.g. criticize vs criticise). :lisalaugh:
At least I knew the z part :lisalaugh:

Now that I think about it... those are functionally the official rules, because hating the letter "e" would also explain why it's "judgment" in American English and "judgement" elsewhere.

The z vs s situation is kind of funny. Like if you take realize, it’s a word that comes from French (réaliser). When taken to English, it changed to a z only. After over a century, it stared to go back to the original root, spelling it with an s sometimes. Almost full circle :haylul:

never! i read dictionaries as hobbies believe it or not :jisoono:
Read an entomology dictionary are. Those are really interesting and really changes how you see language.:sanathink: Then you'll agree the dictionary might be wrong.:icgyu: A dictionary is lilterally a book made my random people who are telling everyone else how to spell/define words. Perfect example is color/colour. Depending on where your from, both are correctly spelled but a diction might list one as correct and not the other. Dictionaries are also not science based but profit based. The writers of dictionaries will ignore reality and write what sells. SCRIPPS spelling bees are slanted toward a very specific dictionary; Merriam-WEBSTER. That doesn't mean Merriam-WEBSTER is correct, it's what they chose to use. I prefer Oxford because its what most colleges prefer and reference. Anyone can "coin" a new word. It'll be "slang" but if it's around long enough and used enough it becomes vernacular. Yet dictionary publishers might still choose to exclude it. This year 7 korean words were added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

This is ironic as they aren't English words and never will be. This is done mostly because its a way to update a book and sell new copies because now the old ones are out of date.

Most English words weren’t English words until they were :pandatea: It’s just how languages are, and English is a language that loves to borrow words from other languages. So the part about they never will be can’t be definitely said

Logical but then at what point will English cease to be English or will other languages become English. It's kind of sad to think about but at some point how many languages will only be remember in a dictionary because the only thing left is what English stole? Personally, I love that English steals words so often but think it would be a tragedy if all the world condensed down to one language.

Depends on what the future world looks like. Language has a close connection with culture, so if all cultures associated with English native speakers die, then the days of English are probably numbered. There’s already languages that contributed to English and have died out, causing them to only appear in the entomology of modern day languages (such as Old English, Anglo-Norman, Old Norse, Classic Latin, ect). Some of them could be argued as simply becoming evolved rather than dying out, but that form of the language did die. And modern English will definitely die out and evolve at some point. It’s just how it is. But also borrowing parts of languages seems unlikely to lead to the death of all other languages. Unless we become fully culturally united, which I don’t think will happen any time soon, there will probably always be distinct languages between groups of people. There are dying languages, but that has happened forever with no connection to English, so to me that’s often just the nature of language and culture. And in the modern day we can actually take steps to preserve languages even if they die out conversationally, and that’s something that’s actually done. These things will change, but it doesn’t mean that they’ll definitely be worse. Different yes. But worse isn’t guaranteed.
