I've been watching it while I've been puzzling, and it's fine? Like perfectly serviceable kids' animation. It doesn't make me want to see the sequel, though I'm a bit curious as to why the sequel has made such a splash.

Have you seen either yet? What do you think?

I totally didn't see you tagging me but in regards to the actual movie - I've seen both and it's a fantastic animation and a fantastic story

firstly you have to understand who ne zha is and I think this is the best explanation I can show from an English speaking perspective



one thing is is that the subject NE ZHA is deeply rooted in chinese culture and literature (the most famous is Sun Wukong - the monkey king) and the artwork and cinematography is brilliant not just for Chinese animation standards but also animation globally

Furthermore the story is pretty good

guoman (domestic animation and comics) has been a rising force in the past... decade or so in china as a huge part of rediscovering a national and cultural style to these forms of art
what you really need to know was that china was at one point quite strong in animation, but funding cuts from the cultural revolution and following political upheavals had cast it aside -- I'll need to find the sources again but at one points miyazaki himself was inspired by works like princess iron fan (iirc) -- and it was a common complaint within the industry that they were only getting outsourced work, and that chinese animation had no character of its own
already nezha is an established deity, but what the nezha team did really well here was to tell a very modern interpretation while building up on that missing chinese style to animation
whereas in the original story nezha sacrifices himself in a show of filiality, here you have him outright declare that his fate is for him, not the heavens to decide; not at all a modern school of thought (many, if not most of the beloved legends involve toiling against fate) per se, but definitely a modern take on nezha's story itself
it also built on a lot of the previous animation successes as a sort of culmination of the industry, which is another reason why it's so beloved
big fish begonia opened the doors to commercial chinese animation success but its style was very much ghibli, havoc in the heavens had one sun wukong rebirth scene with the dunhuang elements referencing back the original animated series that made a splash, white snake still followed the more 3d disney-like models even with the traditional chinese influences on character design and especially landscape, jiang ziya's incredible 2d opening was only for that, the opening -- it's another big reason why it's considered the baby of this massive network of animation studios

as for nezha 2, I don't think it's spectacular spectacular either, but it's a stronger story than the first of an already beloved movie, and a technical marvel of basically the entire chinese animation industry (only slightly exaggerating here) to boot
