Sensitive Do you ever visit religious places as tourism? (1 Viewer)

Just in case I put sensitive. Ofc this is within reason, you can’t pick any old religious place and say you want to enter it. But I mean places that do allow visitors. Do you ever visit those?

I do, mostly Christian churches. Primarily catholic or Protestant, but I’ve visited orthodox churches too. I’ve also been on a mosque, a touristy one. I’m sure I’ve been to some religious areas for other religions too, but not as often.

I have visited several churches. I also went to a mosque when they had a day they were open to the public (there is an event for one weekend in my citywhere there are free tours/information sessions of places that are not normally open to the public/places people would normally frequent that aren’t of that faith). They gave us a copy of the quran and I learned so much

When I go to a country or city as a tourist, I visit all the places that are open for tourists.
This is part of the journey to me, I want to know more about their culture, traditions, food, etc. I’m protestant, but once, I had a really good conversation about religions with someone when I visited a mosque. I also visited Catholic, Ortodox, Buddhist, etc. temples. For me, widening my perspective is really important, but I’m also aware that walking into an other religion’s temple is something many can’t or don’t want to do.

I don't travel a lot, but i hear of people visiting orthodox and catholic churches but it also makes me wonder why nobody ever tours baptist or methodists churches. I know it's a dumb question, but what's the difference between them that makes one a tourist spot and the other not 🫠

I recently went to Dubai and I saw some mosques, but didn't go inside

if i had to guess its the art and decorations ie stained glass windows ect.

Probably mainly architecture, history, prevalence, and location. Even within the categories of catholic and orthodox, something like the notre dame in Paris was way more visited than a Catholic Church in very rural Oklahoma in town that’s barely big enough to be called a town, right? It’s not in a tourist spot, isn’t as directly tied to history, and the architecture is vastly different. People like looking at fancy and pretty things, and major Catholic and orthodox churches in tourist heavy and historically very important areas are very fancy and pretty usually.

From my understanding you can’t visit most mosques unless you’re muslim, but it may depend on where you are

no because as an atheist i find them boring. if i had to visit a church i'd go to one of the four that are a walkable distance from my house

I’m an atheist too but, aside from the fact I like history, they can also just be really pretty. I like pretty things

my parents and I visited the Tabernacle in SLC and watched their choir perform. it was so epic! it was a huge sanctuary that was about arena sized, and there were boatloads of choir members, I think around 300 or so?

yeap there are lots of places in China that have Buddhist or Dao ancestry and they are open to the public

- St. Stephan's Cathedral

- Glastonbury Abbey
- Canterbury Cathedral
- Stonehenge (I mention it because many people think it's a prehistoric ritual site. But according to some scientists it's connected with ancient astronomy).

- St. Colman's Cathedral
- Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral
- Saint Patrick's Cathedral (I visited it a few times because my brother lives near Dublin)

I went to Frauenkirche in Dresden. I liked it

Stained glass is nice, but there’s a difference between a mostly standard looking building with stained glass vs fancy gothic style church with stained glass. Churches with stained glass that are often visited and therefore associated with stained glass tend to fall in the later category.
