I bet no one will be surprised by the fact that it’s from the eastern part of Europe. Makes sense, given that Dracula is associated with Romania. But that’s where it can get surprising. As famous as Dracula is, the word vampire doesn’t come from Romanian. Instead, it actually comes from the Serbo-Croatian word вампир (vampir). In fact, Romanians don’t even use a variant of “vampire” usually (though they can), their common word for vampire is strigoi. I wouldn’t have guessed that vampire comes from Serbs-Croatian at all, I probably would have just assumed it came from Romanian because of the vampire stereotype. But it’s pretty cool to see where it’s actually from

Nosferatu is also used, but it’s more of an imported pop culture term from the west. Strigoi is the traditional Romanian word for vampire and vampire like creatures that they use.
