Oh, that's a good one! Especially since it lets them be as open or not as they want. I'm sure you've gotten the whole range of innocuous to "wow, I would not have known" answers to that.

This is what I ended up doing. I have a better memory for things that have been written down rather than "I should ask so-and-so about that" and expecting I'll just remember it.

Also, I ended up worrying for nothing. It was my friend's birthday, and I wanted to make sure everything was perfect for them because they've had a really hard year, but there weren't any "so...." awkward lulls.

it's just an ice breaker to find out something about the other person and can be used even if you are kinda close to said person but havne't seen them in a while or catching up

I usually just ask how are they since sure it's not the most lighting the world up question but it's something someone can always appreciate being asked if you happen to ask if when things are rough for them but I also just keep conversations going and don't sign off like if I go to bed I'll just respond in the morning rather than pointing that out which doesn't leave the conversation open for lulls really.
