At most of the places I’ve taken buses, the bus either stops at all stops or they stop if they see that someone is at the next stop and/or someone inside has pressed the button signaling that they want to get off at the next station. I’ve never been at a place where indicating is necessary. But I’ve only taken the bus in some parts of the US and in various European cities, and they all had clearly set areas for bus stops and just assumed that people waiting at the stop are at the bus stop because they want the bus (though tbf, sometimes people want another bus, but I guess there’s always someone who wants to get on or off at those busy stations). Except for the school bus ofc, those are just different.

like I said in my city (I can't speak of all of Australia) but it's fairly low density and there are maybe routes where no one needs to get off or get on so the bus just doesn't stop at those stops (it makes the journey slightly faster????)

Yeah I’m sure it does depend on population density. But for me the difference with high and low density is that in high density cities buses stop at every stop, and in lower density ones the bus only stops is someone is visibly at the bus stop or someone on the bus presses the stop button. But Australia is pretty different so it could be anything from a cultural difference to terrain difference to wanting to minimize the number of rogue kangaroos from entering the bus and pulling out karate moves

the other thing with indicating is that there is usually stops that have multiple buses per stop (if that makes sense)

so like the one I go for work there's like three possible buses that stop at that particular stop hence also why hte need to indicate

I think it really depends on what state and city you're in lol cause I haven't heard great things about public transport in Perth. Like though our train system in Sydney is fragile and at least it's so big and so are our bus routes yk? I can get anywhere without a car

it's actually pretty good in the metro areas but obviously perth is less dense than sydney and geographically also I think the "metro" area is smaller as well

but then again I live in a fairly medium-high social economic area so maybe my perceptions are biased compared to some of the lower social economic suburbs

Hard to use buses here when there are barely any. By the time I drive to a bus stop that works for my route I could probably have just driven to the destination at that point

Our stations and buses go into the suburban areas too, like it's pretty extensive

I am too but I like to go around and be aware of every place and it seems like the East, which is generally more richer (and by extension, whiter) has better services than the West, but there are pockets such as where I'm from and Parramatta, for example, which are pretty good

well I can't speak for all of Australia but this is roughly what a bus stop here looks like

it has the bus numbers on the top and the times on the bottom and you can't see it but on the back it even has a list of the bus stops each bus travels to

I’ve seen stops like that too, where multiple lines combine, but I can’t remember any of them not being really busy stops. Usually at the points like that that I’ve seen there would always be people boarding or exiting, so I guess they treat those stops the same as single line stops just due to traffic density.

no, i use public transport everyday so i memorised the bus schedule by now and never had this happen to me. all because that one damn spongebob episode unlocked the fear of being stuck in a place where you miss all the buses back home in me
