Please don't ever lose this perspective. I despise the nihilism in the culture that permeates so many people. I hear so many times from people "this is how we do things it's too late to change them" "It can't be done here" etc.

History is full of discredited and discarded systems that were once seen as the only way to do things because of things like "human nature". Feudalism being a good example.

Things like the housing crisis can be fixed.

According to Statistik Austria* the average rent in Vienna (one of the largest cities in Europe), without utilities, was € 482.20 per month in 2023. Over half of the city lives in social (public) housing.

There is a way to fix many if not all the problems in our societies. And almost all of them are realistic and have been done before somewhere.

Exactly. If we have come this far without dying off then I know we can live through whatever we're going through. Especially the environmental crisis right now. We've fucked up enough to make permanent changes and we should be ashamed but at the peak of production in the Roman Empire the climate did get warmer, when the western half collapsed and Europe went into the medieval ages the climate dropped.

We should never lose our humanitarian perspectives. We might as well be facists if we do accept defeat.

No, one doesn't have to follow unjust laws, and in a liberal society, one may avoid punishment for violating an unjust law through the mechanism of jury nullification. The latter being the great hope of campaigns of civil disobedience: Sometimes the state is the biggest criminal of them all, and as long as ordinary people have the power to determine whether someone is innocent or guilty of a criminal charge, people have the opportunity to act against the state without inevitably sacrificing their own freedom.


And no, realism and idealism are not opposites, but we'd first have to define realism. Often what is described as "realism" is delusion or projection. Ppl really be clinging - for dear life - to objectively discredited systems and calling this "realism". Because the presence of those systems is what makes up the status quo. It is not realistic to focus on what is, because you ignore what could be.
