The national confederate flag had 3 iterations. The second iteration was adopted in 1863 and it was called the stainless banner, named such because it had the confederate battle flag canton on the top left while the rest of the flag was white. In 1865, it was changed by adding a red strip to the right side and called the bloodstained banner. This was largely because people complained about the stainless banner being too easily mistaken for a white surrender flag/giving mixed messages. However, they may as well have just waited because just a month later, they actually ended up being in need of a flag of surrender
