Chapter 1

Anna Boatwright heaved the last of the luggage into the back of her SUV. She and her live-in twin brother Adam had been working tirelessly for the past two hours packing up to move to Los Angeles to be closer to their dad and ailing grandma.

“Is that all of them?” Anna asked her brother.

“Yeah, I believe so,” Adam replied. “Let’s go!”

Adam kissed his sister and two sleeping nieces before he got into the driver’s seat, gunned the engine, and took off for the airport. It would be about six hours to Los Angeles, including a connecting flight in Salt Lake City, but Anna and Adam were ready for it.

By the time they got to Los Angeles, it was almost lunchtime in Torrance. Neil was waiting for them at the arrival gate when they got off the plane.

“Pepaw!” Naomi cheered as she ran into Neil’s outstretched arms.

“Hey, pumpkin!” Neil greeted his granddaughter. When Claire joined her, he gave her a hug as well. “Claire, the last time I saw you, you couldn’t walk yet!”

“Yeah, she took her first steps at ten months old,” Anna said, going in for a group hug with Adam.

“Oh, wow! How are you handling your S-P-L-I-T?”

Anna gave her dad a thumbs-up sign to represent the fact that she’s glad she divorced Garrett. Sure, the girls were upset at first, and afraid they’d be judged for having a single mom, but after being read books about different family structures by their mother, they feel a lot better about it now.

“It was just finalized,” Anna explained further.

“I’m sorry again to hear you divorced. Maybe God has a man in mind who is even better than Garrett was.”

“Oh, I hope so.”

When Neil took Anna and Adam to their new house, the Brantley and Sons moving truck was parked next to the curb, with the movers waiting on the front porch. The father was good friends with Neil, so he’d hired them on to help move his children into their new home.

“Neil!” Brantley Senior addressed his friend when he saw him getting out of his car. He patted him on the back to say hello. Meanwhile, Brantley Junior watched in anticipation as Neil’s daughter joined them. He had a girlfriend already, but that didn’t stop him from flirting with every girl who crossed his path.

“Hey, sexy,” he said in a husky voice to try and impress the girl. “Are those space pants? Your ass is out of this world!”

Anna was speechless. She’d been hit on with pickup lines before, but this was a new one.

“They’re actually baseball pants – her ass is out of your league,” Neil clapped back. “Besides, you have a girlfriend already, kid.”

“So?” Junior argued.

“So… I can call her really quick and tell her you were flirting with my daughter,” Neil threatened.

Junior blushed. “Sorry.”

“Anna, why don’t you take the girls to the beach while Dad and I move our stuff in?” Adam suggested. “You look like you could use some downtime.”

“Yeah, your car is in the garage over there,” Neil added, pointing towards the open two-car garage with his thumb.

Anna gave him an appreciative smile. “I think I will. Girls, let’s go to the beach!”

“Yay!” Naomi cheered.

“Are you ready to head to the beach, my love?” Luke Hemmings asked his girlfriend, Daisy Landon. They were on their staycation baby-moon and had just checked into a beachside hotel suite. The hotel staff had left them a little note to congratulate them on their incoming bundle of joy, as well as two bottles of wine, including a virgin wine for Daisy.

“Absolutely,” Daisy said. “Are you sure the kids will be okay with Michael, though?”

Luke wrapped his arms around her waist, his hands landing gently on top of her seven-month-pregnant belly. “He’ll be fine.” The tone of his voice made the hairs on Daisy’s neck stand up. “You left him with plenty good instructions.”

“Yeah, I know… it’s just that with the pregnancy, my motherly instincts are at an all-time high right now.”

Luke chuckled, the vibration of his vocal cords giving Daisy goosebumps. “Let’s just go and have a good time, alright?” He kissed her on the neck, and they finally left the room.

“Okay, we’re here,” Anna said to the girls. “Naomi, unbuckle your seatbelt and hop on out, but wait for me while I get your sister.”

“Okay,” Naomi said.

“Bleach?” Claire chirped as Anna undid her seatbelt.

“Yeah, you’re going to touch sand and water for the first time! It’ll be fun.”

After she picked Claire up, the grabbed her dog Lucky’s leash and commanded him to “unload”.

Lucky was a former stray who had escaped an abandoned house. He only has three legs due to one of them being crushed when he was hit by a car. But still, that doesn’t stop him from being his goofy, rambunctious self.

Lucky obeyed his master’s command, and they headed for the sand. Anna scoured the beach for a good place to put the towels and beach toys until she found an empty gap between spots that was just big enough for three towels.

Next to Anna’s spot were Daisy and Luke, who were chatting it up about baby names. Anna sat down as soon as she heard the lady ask the man, “What do you think of the name Claire for a girl?”

Anna couldn’t help but laugh in spite of herself, grabbing the other woman’s attention. “Sorry I laughed, but that’s my youngest’s name,” she said. “What a coincidence if you name the baby that!”

“Oh, it’s okay,” she said. “Luke here has been vetoing every single name I mention, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t like Claire, either.”

“And I don’t… sorry, Dais,” “Luke” added.

“Daisy, huh?” Anna asked. “Cute name! I’m Anna; nice to meet you!”

The two women shook hands.

“You, too,” Daisy said. “You’re not from the south, are you? Because me too!”

“Get out of town! I AM from the south, and I never thought I’d meet another southerner in California, besides my dad!”

“Where are you from? I’m from Dayton, Tennessee, near Chattanooga.”

“Mulberry, Arkansas, near Fort Smith,” Anna replied. “Holy shit, we’re even both from small towns!”

“What brings you here? Are you on vacation?”

“No, I just moved here. What about you?”

“Well… both,” Luke said. “We live here, but we’re also on vacation! It’s a baby-moon for our as yet unnamed baby.”

Anna took a good, long look at Luke. He was handsome! His blond hair stood up on his head, and he had sparkling blue eyes and a lip ring that glimmered in the sun. This ogling made Daisy feel extremely uncomfortable, like Anna was going to steal him away.

“Um… you do realize he’s my boyfriend and my baby daddy, right?” Daisy asked suspiciously.

“Oh, no, I wasn’t trying to flirt,” Anna said. “I can respect boundaries. I was just wondering if he had any single friends.”

“Ah, my mate Michael is single,” Luke said. “Shall we set you up on a blind date?”

“Well, is he good with kids? That’s kind of my top priority.”

“He’s excellent with kids. He’s also sweet, funny, and did I mention that he’s even more handsome than I am?”

“Luke!” Daisy teased, punching his arm. “You’re plenty handsome!”

“Thank you, my love; that means a lot.”

Luke gave Daisy a kiss on the lips and turned back to Anna. “So, are you in?”

“I’m so in!” Anna agreed.

Chapter 2

Anna and the girls were playing with Lucky when they were approached by Luke and Daisy. “Hey, Anna,” he said, grabbing her attention. “So, I called Michael, and he agreed to the blind date.”

“What’s a blind date?” Naomi asked.

“Naomi, interrupting is rude and uncalled for,” Anna scolded. “I’ll tell you when I’m done talking to this man over here. Why don’t you keep playing with Lucky?”

Anna put her attention back on Luke as soon as she was satisfied that Naomi had dropped the subject. “That’s wonderful, Luke! When and where are we meeting?”

“You’ll meet him for dinner at Olive Garden Sunday night at six. Do you want to know the address?”

“Absolutely! Tell him I can’t wait to meet him.”

“The feeling is mutual.”

When Luke returned to his spot on the beach, Anna addressed Naomi’s question. “Now you can ask that question, honey.”

“What’s a blind date?” Naomi asked again.

“Yeah, what’s a… ‘bind late’?” Claire repeated.

“A blind date, girls, is a meeting between a man and a woman where neither person knows much about the other. It comes from the term you use for somebody who can’t see – ‘blind’.”

“Oh.”

After a couple of hours at the beach, Anna took the kids home to check on the moving progress.

“Hey, sis,” Adam greeted her when he saw her. “Did Claire like the bleach?”

Neil laughed. “Bleach?” he repeated.

“Yeah, that’s Claire’s word for ‘beach’,” Anna explained. “But yeah, she loved it! Oh, and I have a date.”

“Oh? Who with?”

“His name is Michael, and he’s apparently sweet, funny, and handsome.”

“Apparently?” Adam asked.

“It’s a blind date. A guy named Luke set me up. Michael and I are meeting at Olive Garden tonight at six.”

“Oh, that sounds fun!” Neil commented. “Congratulations!”

“Yeah, thanks.”

Michael Clifford arrived at Olive Garden with his head held high, ready to impress this girl he was about to meet. He had a tulip in his hands and a very good idea of how to present himself.

“Table for one?” the hostess asked.

“Two,” Michael corrected. “I’m on a blind date.”

“Oh, how fun! I met my husband on a blind date. Follow me!”

If he wasn’t confident enough already, Michael sure would’ve been now. He loved hearing success stories, such as meeting on a blind date and then getting married.

The hostess led Michael to a nearby booth and placed two menus across from each other on the table.

“Your server will be right with you. Enjoy your date!”

“Thank you, love,” Michael said.

As soon as he got comfortable, Michael texted the girl, Anna, with what he was wearing tonight.

“Hi, it’s your blind date! Just to let you know, I’m wearing a red-and-white plaid button-up and jeans,” he wrote. Momentarily after he tapped the Send symbol, a reply came in that said:

“Great! I’m wearing a lavender tunic and gray slacks.”

Then, she added in another bubble, “I can’t wait to meet you!” This was immediately followed by a third bubble: “I’m omw there; shouldn’t be more than five.”

“Me neither,” he replied.

True to her words, Anna pulled up five minutes later, parking in front of the restaurant. She parked her car, got out with her purse, and asked the hostess about a guy wearing plaid with jeans.

“Yep, I seated him just five minutes ago,” she said. “He’s over there.”

The hostess pointed to a column of booths to Anna’s left, and one of them, sure enough, was occupied by such a guy.

As she came closer, Anna noticed a dimpled smile and jade-like green eyes. His hair was platinum blond and shaggy, and he had a stud over his right eyebrow.

“Hey, I’m Anna Boatwright,” she greeted him. “You’re Michael, right?”

“I sure am – Michael Clifford,” he said, shaking her hand. As she sat down across from him, he added, “I hope you don’t mind; I’ve already ordered our drinks.”

“No, not at all. What did you get me?”

“I got us both Italian cream sodas. Yours is strawberry-flavored.”

Anna gasped in awe. “Okay, first of all: how in the world did you know Olive Garden was my favorite place to eat?”

“Well, it’s my favorite, too. I also love their cream sodas.”

“You’re kidding me! And not only do I also love them, but the strawberry flavor is my go-to! You’re a mind-reader – I like that.”

“Okay, an original cream soda for the gentleman and a strawberry one for the lady,” the waiter said as he distributed the drinks. “Would you like to order your food now?”

“Yeah, I usually get the shrimp scampi,” Anna said.

“Holy shit! Me too!” Michael exclaimed. “And I thought I’d never find…” Michael was about to say, “another girl after my previous date died”, but he decided it wasn’t important right now. “Never mind.”

Luckily for Michael, Anna took the hint.

“Two orders of shrimp scampi?” the waiter asked.

“Yes, sir,” Michael said. “Thank you.”

When the waiter walked away, Michael asked where Anna was from.

“I just moved in from Arkansas,” Anna said. “It’s a little town near Fort Smith called Mulberry.”

“Neat! I’m from Sydney, Australia.”

“Oh, really? I thought you were English or something?”

Michael laughed. “Yeah, I get that a lot. Or, I should say we get that a lot; I’m in a band.”

Anna was very intrigued by this. She had never dated a guy in a band before. “Oh, tell me about this band.”

“Of course! The band is called 5 Seconds of Summer; do you know us?”

“Oh, aren’t you the band with the single ‘Amnesia’?”

Michael smiled. “Yes, that’s us! Are you a fan?”

“Well, I listen to your music, but I don’t really follow you enough to call myself a fan.”

“Then, you MUST see us in concert! We put on amazing shows.”

Anna smirked in contemplation. “I don’t really go to rock concerts… I’m more of a country concertgoer.”

“Why is that?”

Anna shrugged. “I’m just afraid of being moshed and pushed around by other fans.”

“Oh, our fans do none of that. In fact, we’re going on a little promotional tour next month for our upcoming third album; you should come!”

“Well, that depends. How famous are you, and how much are tickets usually?”

“We’re pretty popular, but not everybody knows who we are. That’s why we’ve been dubbed ‘the biggest band nobody’s ever heard of’.”

Just then, Michael’s cell phone rang. It was Luke, probably just checking in.

“Hey, Luke,” he said. “Yeah, I’m fine… Oh, really…? Well, tell her Uncle Mikey said congrats in advance… Okay, talk to you later. Cheers!”

“What did Luke say?” Anna asked.

“He was just checking in and telling me Daisy just went into labor.”

“Aw, that’s amazing! Maybe we should go see them later?”

“We can definitely do that.”

Chapter 3

By the end of the date, it was almost time for the girls to go to bed, and Anna had wanted to be there in case they didn’t sleep well in their new house.

“Well, thanks for meeting me here,” Michael said as he walked Anna to her car. “Which one is yours?”

“The dark red Hyundai SUV in the front,” Anna told him. “And I feel the same way. I’m glad I met you.”

“Me too.” Anna unlocked the doors with the key fob, and Michael opened the driver’s side door for her. “Oh! What a gentleman!”

“Is that one of the things you look for in a partner?”

“Absolutely. That and if he’s good with kids… but you certainly seem like you’re compassionate towards them.”

“Oh, I adore kids. You have girls, you said?”

“Yeah, two of them; Naomi is four, and Claire is two.”

“Any boys?”

“Nope… but I really want one in the future, hopefully my next.”

“Well, you never know!” Michael looked at his watch: 7:36. “I guess I’d best let you go. See you later!”

“Bye.”

The whole drive home consisted of thoughts about the date. Anna really loved what she learned about Michael, and she couldn’t wait to see him again. When she got to the house, Adam was reading the girls a bedtime story on the living room couch.

“…and then, Goldilocks tried Mama Bear’s bed, but it was too soft,” Adam read aloud. “So then, she tried Baby Bear’s… and it was just right. In fact, she ended up falling asleep.”

Anna waited until Adam finished the story to chime in. “Girls, are you being read to before bed?”

“This is actually my third time reading the story of the three bears,” Adam reported. “Claire kept saying, ‘Again, again!’”

Anna laughed. She was usually the one who would read to the girls before bed, and she’s experienced this from Claire too many times to count. “Well, it’s a little bit past your bedtime, kiddos. Let’s head upstairs.”

“No ‘Rella?” Claire asked.

“Nope, maybe tomorrow night. You two have to get your beauty rest.”

“Mama hold?”

“Sure, I’ll carry you.”

After she put both girls to bed, Anna returned downstairs, where Adam was now in the kitchen, getting a snack from the fridge.

“So, how was it?” Adam asked, producing an apple and closing the fridge door.

They meandered towards the living room as they talked. “It went amazingly well,” Anna said, beaming with great confidence. “He indicated that he wants to see me again.”

“Well, look at you, baby sister! You snagged a guy on your first day here, but I can’t find a girl for shit!”

“Well, first of all, I’m only three minutes younger than you are. And secondly, you just have to get out more. Maybe take a walk around the block and see if you find any?”

“Yeah, maybe. So, what does Michael look like?”

“He’s tall with his hair dyed red, and he’s got these gorgeous green eyes and a wonderful smile that has dimples deeper than a canyon.”

Adam laughed. “Deeper than a canyon, you say?”

“Well, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit. But he’s also really sweet. When he walked me to my car, he opened my door for me.”

“That’s really cool! I’d love to meet him sometime.”

Daisy had trouble sleeping in the hospital that night. It was a combination of her epidural wearing off and just being uncomfortable in general. In the middle of the night, at around three in the morning, she stage-whispered Luke’s name to wake him up so they could talk.

“Yeah, love?” Luke asked, stretching and yawning. Then, he looked at his watch. “Dais, it’s only 2:47 in the morning. Go back to sleep!”

“That’s just it; I can’t sleep,” Daisy admitted.

“Then let’s put some white noise on.” Luke pulled out his phone and looked on his White Noise app. “I have a cat purring, rain sounds, fan sounds…”

“Do the purring cat. It reminds me of Smokie.”

Smokie is Daisy’s cat, whom she had adopted on her first date with Luke.

Luke chuckled to himself as he tapped the Play button for the purring cat. “Now, go to sleep!”

Daisy finally closed her eyes and let the constant purring lull her to sleep. But it didn’t last long, because twenty minutes later, she felt a long, hard contraction, like the baby was making its way down the birth canal.

“Luke!” she exclaimed, sitting up straight. “I think it’s time!”

Luke sat up as well. “What?!” he shouted. “Well, don’t just sit there – press the pager button!”

Momentarily after Daisy pushed the button, the nighttime nurse, an Asian woman named Daphne, came in.

“How can I help, Miss Landon?” she asked.

“My girlfriend says she thinks it’s time,” Luke explained, making air quotes for “it’s time”.

“Awesome!” Daphne smiled brightly, showing her bunny-like front teeth. She was even smiling with her eyes. “May I check your cervix to see the dilation?”

“Sure,” Daisy said.

After she measured Daisy’s cervix, Daphne stood up. “It looks like you’re at a full ten centimeters. I’ll page Dr. Cole for you; in the meantime, why don’t you do some practice pushes?”

Daphne called the doctor, a portly black woman in her forties, who came in ten minutes later. By this time, Daisy was ready to push for real.

“Alright, Miss Daisy,” Dr. Cole said. “Whenever you’re ready.”

Daisy moaned in pain through the first push, prompting Luke to take her left hand.

“I’m here, babe,” he said. “Just squeeze my hand.”

“UGHHHHHHHHHHH! WHY DID MY EPIDURAL HAVE TO WEAR OFF OVERNIGHT???” Daisy screeched during the second push. “IT HURTS!”

“The head and the shoulders are the worst,” Daphne said. “After that, it should be smooth-sailing.”

Two agonizing minutes later, Luke said, “Great job, Dais! I’m going to pull it all the way out, alright?”

Luke pulled the baby out and was tempted to close his ears when he heard it cry. “Holy crap, this baby is loud! And…” Luke checked the baby’s underside. “It’s a girl!”

“What did you say?” Daisy shouted over the cries.

“It’s a girl, babe! Let me wipe your forehead; you’re sweating like a pig!”

Luke placed the baby on top of Daisy’s chest, and then he took a cloth and blotted up the beads of sweat on her forehead.

“Congratulations, you two!” Dr. Cole praised. “What’s her name?”

“Luke, what do you think of Lorelai, after Lauren?”

Luke rubbed his chin in contemplation, and Daisy held her breath, convinced he’d veto this name like every other name he put down. She was taken completely by surprise when he actually agreed with her.

“It’s always nice to honor loved ones,” Luke explained. “My middle name is also that of my dad and paternal grandpa.” He laughed when he heard Daisy sigh with relief.

“Finally!” she cheered. “Yeah, it’s Lorelai Grace Hemmings. Lorelai after my bestie who was murdered last summer, and Grace because it’s like she was handpicked for me by Lauren.” She let a tear fall, and Luke wiped it away.

“Shh… don’t cry,” he soothed. “Be happy she’s here in your arms now.”

Chapter 4

The next morning, Anna was helping Naomi learn how to use the dishwasher when her phone pinged with a text message. She didn’t think anything of it at first, but then it pinged a second and third time.

“Adam, would you help Naomi?” Anna asked. “It sounds like an important text.”

“Sure, sis!” Adam agreed, joining them.

“Okay, Uncle Adam is going to help you with the dishes while I answer the text.”

“Okay,” Naomi said.

Anna entered the living room and plopped down on the couch before she grabbed her phone off the coffee table. Then, she opened the message.

“Hey,” Michael had said. The ones that followed were “You awake" and “Daisy had her baby last night.”

Anna smiled as she wrote her reply. “Cool! Boy or girl?”

“A girl called Cecily. Luke sent a picture with Daisy.”

Then, a side profile of Daisy holding Cecily appeared. Daisy was smiling from ear to ear as she held her daughter against her chest. Luke was in the top right corner, looking down at the newborn.

“Adorable!” Anna sent with a heart-eyes emoji.

“Give me a call, and we’ll figure out when we can visit them.”

Anna closed the message and immediately told Siri to call Michael.

“That was quick,” Michael commented.

Anna giggled. “I was eager to hear that sexy voice again,” she said.

“So was I! When do you want to visit Daisy?”

“We have church until noon, and then we’re having lunch together, but we can go around three.”

“That’s perfect! I’ll pick you up at your place at three, then. What’s your address?”

Anna gave Michael an address not far from his, and he jotted it down on paper as she spoke.

“Thank you, Anna. See you at three. Cheers!”

“Bye.”

Anna walked back into the kitchen to see Adam showing Naomi how to run the dishwasher.

“You just push this button here,” he said, pointing at the Start button, “and then it’s going to run for a couple of hours.”

Naomi pushed the button, and the dishwasher started with a whirring sound. Anna clapped for her, and Naomi turned around to face her.

“Hi, Mommy,” she greeted Anna. “Who was pinging you?”

“That was the guy I met last night. Remember me telling you about my blind date?”

“Oh, yeah! Were you blindfolded?”

Anna giggled. “In a way, yeah. But he’s awesome so far. He asked me out on a second date; that’s what the text message was.”

“Is that a good thing?”

“Yes, it means he wants to see me again. You see, that’s what happens after the first date. Boy meets girl, boy asks her out, and if all goes well, boy asks her out again and again until they realize they love each other.”

“And then they get married? Like that ‘sitting in a tree’ song?”

“Well, it’s more complex than that. First, they have to figure out if they’re good enough to marry. Until then, they’re called boyfriend and girlfriend, just like Daisy and Luke.”

“Oh, okay!”

Michael arrived at the address Anna had given him at 3:08. She was in a neighborhood he was unfamiliar with, and as such, he was turned around three times trying to find her house.

When he rang the doorbell, Michael was greeted by either Anna’s brother or a boyfriend. He hoped to God it was the former.

“H-hey, I’m Michael,” he stuttered. “I’m here to pick up your, er…”

“My sister?” the guy presumed. “Yeah, she’s upstairs with the kids. Come in!”

Michael heaved a sigh of relief as he entered the trilevel home. “Oh, good… you’re just her brother. I was afraid you were a boyfriend or something.”

The guy laughed. “Hell no! Why on Earth would I be dating my own twin? That would be incest! I’m Adam, by the way; Anna is killing time by playing with the girls. Make yourself comfortable!”

Meanwhile, Anna was playing Barbie with the girls. She was pretending to be the minister at Barbie and Ken’s wedding, Naomi playing with Barbie and Claire playing with Ken, and she had just said, “You may kiss the bride” when Adam called her name.

“Michael’s here!” he yelled. “He said to tell you he’s sorry he’s late.”

“Be right down!” Anna called back. “Girls, you can keep playing this game if you want, but I want you to play nicely like you always do. I love y’all, and I’ll be back probably after dinner.”

“Bye, Mommy,” Naomi said, hugging her neck. “I love you.”

Anna pulled herself up and left the room, closing the door quietly behind her. When she got downstairs, Michael was chatting with Adam on the couch.

“I see you’ve met my twin brother,” Anna remarked, instigating Michael to whirl around in surprise.

“Hey, Anna,” he said with a wide grin. “Sorry I’m late; I got a bit lost because this neighborhood is new to me.”

“That’s okay,” Anna said as Michael got up from his seat. “It gave me time to play with the girls for a few minutes.”

“Well, I’m glad. Let’s go!”

Anna and Michael linked arms as they walked to Michael’s car, a silver Lexus. Anna whistled as she thought about how expensive it must’ve been for him. “Nice car. How much was it?”

“I’m too humble to flaunt myself like that,” Michael said as he held the car door open. “But it was definitely pricier than your everyday vehicle.”

After Anna climbed in and buckled up, Michael closed the door and got into the driver’s seat.

“We can definitely do that.”

guys, I'm thinking of actually saving this for later and focusing on Cal and Sav's relationship instead before introducing a new character. I hoope that's okay with you. it's jbc I've been neglecting them in favor of Luke and Daisy, so Cal and Sav kinda deserve their own book.

@TALKing2Myself actually, maybe I should just discontinue it... at least til further notice... yanno that thread I posted last night of that Insta post? the one with the first slide saying "5SOS are breaking up?? Click here for proof"? I just had a disturbingt thought that they may have actually been serious. I saw a headline today saying, "Call them a boy band all you want, but don't call this a comeback". After putting two and two together... yeah, that's why I'm thinking such things rn.

Or maybe that isn't true at all... but considering my history of thinking I finally found my "forever obsession" only for that obsession band to break up in the end, idk.

I hope it is not true, but bands break up all the time
it hurts, but we wish them the best always
