Everytime that I mention that I have Ukrainian ancestry, I have had many people apologize to me and talk about how sad the situation is there. Yes what is happening there is terrible and my heart goes out to all those affected, but why is that the first thing people say? Not hey do you know Ukrainian or what foods from Ukraine do you love and then I never know how to properly respond because I have lived in Canada my whole life. People make immediate assumptions.​

First I have to talk to people. I’ll report back once I do that Throughout my time being alive it would be vodka though. I did once get asked about how is it possible to to have German and Jewish ancestry when they’re opposites which was a bit weird but to be fair I think I was in elementary of middle school then.

And it is a shame that people don’t ask about those other things at least in addition. I can understand people starting with that because it’s probably all they hear about but I think people should ask about cultural things too because they could learn some really interesting things, whether it’s about food, traditions, language or the many other aspects.

Since my last name is pretty uncommon in China I have to tell them then they start making racial jokes

either people ask what is that which I like to explain to people
or they talk about how terrible the wars were in the country where I'm from which is always saddening to hear and brings a lot of "what if" because I never even got to live there, or very rarely, they make a racist comment but thankfully that doesn't happen as much nowadays~
