There is a good reason so few animals on the planet earth are blue. While animals can create a large variety of pigments, practically none are capable of creating the pigment for blue. Animals that appear blue, such as birds, bugs, snakes, ect do not actually contain blue pigment. The blue color is created by using the property of refraction. The feathers, scales, ect have such a structure that the light causes the object to appear blue, which is also the reason why they appear to shimmer. The same goes for blue eyes, they do not truly contain blue pigment, but the structure of the irises causes them to appear that way. There are exceptions to this rule and are a couple species that can make blue pigment, but they are incredibly rare.
