Although people usually think of mining as the main source to get iron, in older times Northern Europeans like the Vikings primarily used bog iron. Bog iron is a form of iron deposit found in bogs that are formed by bacteria that oxidize the trace iron in the bog. The iron could then be picked out of the bog directly. It also has certain upsides compared to mined iron at the time, such as being purer and renewable.

Did you know vikings didnt invade finland because they thought we were too poor and would bring nothing for them if they invaded us. Hence finnish population with viking blood is so small it isnt even measured what % of finns have it. Thats cause finns are one of the most genetically isolated populations.

we also were angry pagan gremlings with swamps and bad farm land and such but as a finn living in the world happiest country we are perfect and they were just jealous :uwu:

Were there Vikings in Finland?

Diving into the Finland’s Hidden Role in the Viking Age!

Finns were not Vikings
Finns were not Vikings. The term "Viking" specifically refers to Norse seafarers from modern-day Norway, Sweden, and Denmark who engaged in raiding and trading from the 8th to the 11th centuries. During the Viking Age, Finland was inhabited by various tribes and served as a pivotal point in trade routes between Norway, Sweden, and Russia, indicating some level of contact with Vikings. However, the Finnish people themselves are distinct from the Viking culture. source: Bing

Finns are a separate and distinct group from the norse to the west and Russians (the ones people think of) to the east. They even have a language that isn’t in the same overarching language family as Russian and Swedish, and most of Europe. Though there are some indigenous groups in Russia that share more with the Finns, like some from Siberia. In modern day the Finns share more with Scandinavia than they used to, but earlier in history less so.
