It may just make it even worse but some male octopuses don’t survive mating because the female sometimes eats them after Sometimes male octopuses have to poison the female before mating so they can survive the encounter. Most female octopuses don’t survive childbirth either. There really is a wide variety of options for what happens to octopuses after mating and they all such big time

Praying mantises do this too except they do it during mating, starting with the head, so the abdomen finishes the rest of the process while the rest of the body is uh... eaten

The longest living species tend to be the biggest and live in colder waters. Even then, the max is 5 years in the wild. Most common octopuses live no more than 1-2 years.
