What’s your opinion on food plating/presentation? (1 Viewer)

Basically how nice your food looks. Is it something you care about and like to work on? Or would you eat anything, no matter how hideous, as long as the taste is good?

For me I usually don't care a whole lot. With some new recipes I do like to plate nicely at least once, mostly so I can get a nice photo to keep. Especially for recipes that are kinda time consuming and can be pretty. After that it can look like tar and I’d be okay with that. Of course celebratory things are different, like someone’s birthday cake. Though I won’t deny that I’m not the best at making it stunning, and i don’t have the patience to try. So it ends up being as nice as I can make within reason

I really couldn't care less and I'd take it one step further and say that fancy plating might even annoy me, it seems like a waste of time for something i'll be shoveling down in a moment and it often leads to disproportionate meals, etc. If it's fine dining it's part of the experience but not if I'm eating because I'm hungry.

What about celebratory things like birthday cakes? Do those fall more under fine dining, or do you also not prefer a lot of work in presentation for things like that?

Since cakes are often about the gesture I can appreciate when effort is put into making one regardless of what kind of effort that is. If I just wanted to enjoy some good cake I probably wouldn't care what it looks like if it tastes good. Of course effort is always appreciated and I would never complain about someone plating food nicely for me in a personal situation - even if I don't think it's necessary.
