Ugggghh, I'm so unexpectedly stressed. Why does eBay let someone use your name and email and immediately start selling stuff without validating any of it???

I called them and reported the content with my actual eBay account (they used my second email to make the fake one), and the customer service said it could take up to 72 business hours to review, which is 9 days.

In my experience, whenever you report smth they take forever to respond and then end up doing nothing

Yeah, it's honestly insane to me how little validation they require before allowing just any rando to use their platform to scam people. It only took the scammer 15 minutes from account setup to when they started making fake sales postings.

I understand why companies want people to be able to buy as frictionless as possible, but I think selling stuff should require more validation than simply the fact that the email exists.

eBay has responded to me to say that this doesn't violate their terms and conditions, and the posting with pictures clearly lifted from Amazon is not suspicious at all and can stay up.

My takeaway from this is: don't buy things on eBay. They clearly do not give a shit about protecting their users.

Oh, good idea! Unfortunately, it's my legit/main email that they used, so I'm going to have to go through things and figure out where I would need to update, but I can domain block for now, and change my email later!

I tried that immediately, but they had it set up so a password reset request would go to their phone number. It's kind of astonishing how bad a company of eBay's size is at basic user authentication.

Never share your real email address online. Choose an email provider where you can use at least two aliases. When the shit hits the fan, use alias 2, delete alias 1, choose a new alias. Then you have two safe aliases again.

I will look into this! I have gmail, and a cursory read is that you can have aliases.

I'm also pretty sure I never shared this email online, but who knows where a data breach, etc. may have grabbed it.
