Plot: Cassidy Dolan is fresh out of a toxic relationship, and she totally isn't ready for a new one yet... but when she is dared to date Michael from 5 Seconds of Summer as a publicity stunt, she accepts the challenge. But will it just be that, or will it turn into a genuine romance?

Chapter 1

Cassidy Dolan worked diligently to pack up all her belongings. She was getting ready to leave her boyfriend, Nathan Hays, and she’d gotten up at three in the morning to get started. It was now six, a good hour or so before dawn, and she was running out of time before Nathan would usually rise.

Nathan was never a good boyfriend, at least not after they found out they were expecting their identical twin girls. He would spend his days gaming and his nights partying with the boys, making very little, if any at all, time to be with Cassidy. He has also been incredibly rude and disrespectful, not only to her but to her whole family. In fact, her breaking point was when he started hitting on her seventeen-year-old sister Emma, a girl six years his junior.

The breakup wasn’t exactly the worst, but it wasn’t very pretty, either. Last night, when Cassidy spoke the words, “I’m leaving you,” Nathan went into a tirade about how she was throwing away everything they had. But did she care? Heck no! She just wanted to take the twins and run as far away as possible, even if it meant a cross-country road trip.

Cassidy sighed with relief as she zipped the last suitcase. “Okay,” she said to six-month-old Clara. “Are you ready for your first flight? Go clap, clap, clap!”

Clara clapped and giggled, but Nova, the shyer twin, didn’t do anything. Cassidy would’ve coaxed Nova to do the same, but again, she was in a hurry. Instead, she hauled everything out, put the bags in the trunk of her car and the girls in their car seats, and jumped in the driver’s seat. She gunned the engine, pulled out of the driveway, and sped off towards the airport.

Cabot, Arkansas, is situated about 22 miles northeast of Little Rock, and it’s been Cassidy’s home since she was in diapers. Cassidy would surely miss this place, but it was time to move on from it. She wanted to be closer to her family, anyway, because she was practically the only family member who didn’t move over to the west coast after she graduated high school.

When she called her mom, Christy, to tell her she was coming, Christy answered with a very groggy, “Cass, it’s four in the morning!”

“Well, it’s six in the morning here in Arkansas,” Cassidy countered. “Besides, I’m calling because I finally broke up with Nathan last night.”

“Oh, really? Congratulations! I’ve been waiting for you to do this ever since he started flirting with Emma. Are you coming to live with us?”

“Yeah, I’ll be at the airport by noon at the latest.”

“Perfect! I can’t wait to see you. Give Nova and Clara my love.”

“I will. See you later!”

“Bye, honey.”

Both legs of the flight (from Little Rock to Dallas and from Dallas to Los Angeles) were very exciting for the babies, especially Clara, who would wave at all the passersby. She even got the attention of a sweet old lady who waved back. Nova spent her time watching the clouds go by as the plane passed through them.

Unfortunately, this being their first flight also came with tears. For the first few minutes during takeoff on the flight to Dallas, both twins were crying from fear, but Cassidy was quick to alleviate the situation with pacifiers and sensory toys.

The three of them got into Los Angeles just before noon, as scheduled, and Christy was waiting for them at the gate.

“Cassidy, hi!” she greeted her daughter with a warm hug and a kiss on the cheek. “How was the girls’ first flight?”

“They loved it once we took off,” Cassidy reported. “Clara was waving at everyone, and Nova kept gazing out the window at the clouds passing by. Girls, can you wave to Mimi?”

Cassidy mimicked a waving motion for Clara and Nova, and they repeated her. Christy crouched down and waved back before kissing them both on the forehead.

“How have my little princesses been?” Christy asked Cassidy. “How old are they again?”

“They’re doing well,” Cassidy said, following Christy with the stroller. “I’ve been wanting to do baby-led weaning, but Nathan would never let me.”

“Well, how are they going to learn to love solids if they don’t actually learn?”

“Exactly! What would you suggest for their first meal?”

Christy grabbed their bags from the carousel and led them to her car. “I think they’ll like avocado; that was your first solid food, and you loved it!”

Cassidy laughed. “I guess that explains my love for Mexican food.”

“Yeah, that would be why!”

When they were on the road in Christy’s Toyota Highlander, Christy asked how the breakup went.

“Horrible,” Cassidy admitted. “He got really angry about how I was ‘throwing away’ the relationship, when in reality, it was all because of him.”

“Oh, my goodness! You didn’t fight back, did you?”

Cassidy shrugged. “Well, I had to. I mean, I didn’t physically hurt him, but I did tell him what a deadbeat boyfriend he’d been ever since I was pregnant.”

“It sounds like he was one of those guys who was only looking for a sex buddy.”

“No, because he was the best boyfriend I could ever ask for before the girls came along. You could say that he was in it for the sex and not for the commitment that came with it.”

“Yeah, definitely. Well, I told your dad and siblings, and they’re thrilled for you. I never could stand that man.”

“Thanks. I’m glad I did, too. How’s Emma?”

“She’s good. She got her first license last August; she just has to pass another driver’s test to get her official one.”

“Oh, really? What kind of car is she driving?”

“She drives a blue Hyundai Elantra. It’s just her size, too.”

“Oh, cool!”

“Yeah, we’re all really proud of her.” Christy changed the subject. “Do you think you’ll ever start dating again?”

“I don’t know… I only just broke up with Nathan, so I’d need some time to heal.”

“That’s fair enough. I do want you to think about it, though, because you tend to get lonely when a man isn’t with you. Remember all those late-night calls because Nathan was out with the boys?”

“Yeah, I remember. I’ll sleep on it.”

my brother's name is nathan :lisalaugh:
OMG what a coinicidence! :scree:

should I change his name, then? I don't want you to think of your brother in a bad light whenever you read his name. I mean, he's not coming back in the story, but he and his ways will be mentioned.

Chapter 2

As she stepped out of the car, Cassidy instantly regretted wearing jeans with a jacket over her shirt. It was much hotter in San Clemente than in Cabot, as evidenced by the heat hitting her skin like a speeding train. She hadn’t been to California in years, so she’d forgotten how hot it could get.

Cassidy took off her jacket and placed it around her waist. Then, she went around to the back to retrieve the twins. Christy had already gotten Nova, so all she had to do was unbuckle Clara and take her inside.

“Hello!” she called out as she entered the house.

Ralph was working from home today, so he was seated in his favorite armchair in the living room as he typed away on his laptop. He craned his neck and smiled when he saw Cassidy.

“Hi, sweetheart!” he greeted her, putting his laptop on the ottoman and standing up to hug her. “Your mother says you’re moving in with us.”

“That’s right, I am,” Cassidy said. “I hope y’all don’t mind.”

“Of course not! You can stay as long as you’d like.”

“Would you like some lunch?” Christy asked from the kitchen. “I made chicken Parmigiana last night.”

“Sure!” Cassidy put the twins in their highchairs and continued. “Do you have avocados as well?”

“I do; we just bought some for an avocado BLT wrap I’m planning to make.”

Christy took an avocado out of the fridge and placed it on a cutting board for Cassidy. After she sliced the avocado and dished out two suction plates, she put them on the trays in front of the girls.

“Ooh, what is that?” Cassidy asked Clara, who immediately picked up the green stuff and tried to hold it. It was too slippery for her, though, and she cried out of frustration when it slipped out of her hands.

“Aw, Clare-Bear… it’s okay! Try with your fist.”

Cassidy demonstrated with her own fist how to pick up an avocado, and she watched the wheels turn in Clara’s brain as she processed this new skill. Clara smushed it in her fist, and when she realized how messy it was, she smeared it all over the tray. Then, Nova picked up her food and copied her sister.

“Very good, Noves!” Cassidy praised her. “Now put it on your mouth.”

Cassidy continued to guide the girls in learning to eat avocados, laughing along the way at their cuteness.

After lunch, Cassidy put the twins down for a nap. Then, she decided to take one as well, since she’d spent all morning on the plane and she was pretty exhausted.

She didn’t wake up until two hours later at 2:30, when Emma returned from school.

“Hey, Cass,” Emma greeted her as she entered the room. “I didn’t know you were coming over.”

Cassidy rose from the bed and hugged her sister. Emma returned it. “Yeah, didn’t Mom and Daddy tell you?” she asked. “I came to live with y’all. I’ll let you guess why.”

Cassidy put on a smug grin for Emma, who got it immediately.

“Oh, my God! You finally broke up with Nathan?!” Cassidy nodded. “Well, it’s about dang time! You should’ve dumped him the first time he made an advance towards me.”

“Well, I was pregnant at the time. I didn’t want to do it during my pregnancy, and I wanted to see if he’d change his ways once he became a daddy. I gave him six months, and last night was the last straw. He admitted that he wanted to do something extremely pedophilic with you; let’s just put it that way.”

Emma’s hand flew to her mouth faster than a bird in flight. “He didn’t!”

“He did, and here I am!”

“How did the breakup go?”

Cassidy rolled her eyes, telling Emma that it probably didn’t go well. She gave Cassidy a knowing nod.

“Oh, I get you. Hey, Sean and I were going to take Pico for a walk along the beach. Do you want to come?”

Pico is the family dog, a black Spanish water dog. He’s mainly Emma’s dog, but the whole family takes care of him.

“Sean?” Cassidy repeated. “Mom didn’t tell me you had a boyfriend.”

“Yeah, I just started seeing him. He’s new in town, from Idaho. He’s just a crush at this point.”

“Oh, okay! Will this be your first date?”

“Second. He took me to a Rihanna concert for our first one.”

“Oh, sweet! This will be the twins’ first time at the beach as well, if you’d like me to bring them.”

Emma’s face lit up like a streetlight in the evening. “Oh, sure! He loves babies, and he has a baby brother their age.”

Cassidy quirked an eyebrow. “And they’re sixteen years apart?”

“Large family,” Emma explained. “Let’s go; Sean told me to meet him there at three.”

“I can’t wait to meet him.”

When they got to the beach, there was a guy around Emma’s age, presumably also in her grade, standing outside his car in the parking lot. To Cassidy’s surprise, he was black, and he had dreadlocks in his dark brown hair. He was tall and muscular with a stud on the right side of his nose and an earring on each ear.

“Hey, Sean!” Emma addressed him. “I hope you don’t mind my sister and nieces tagging along. They just came to town earlier this afternoon.”

“Not at all,” Sean said with a smile. “The more the merrier! What’s her name?”

“I’m Cassidy,” Cassidy introduced herself. “These are my twin girls, Clara and Nova.”

“Nice to meet you! Oh, the girls are just darling in their matching sundresses and flower bows! Are they identical or fraternal?”

“Identical. Nova has a little birthmark on her left hip; that’s how I tell them apart.”

Sean laughed. “I wondered! What brings you here?”

“I just broke up with my boyfriend, the twins’ father,” Cassidy replied. “It wasn’t a very pleasant split, and I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Ah, I see.”

Chapter 3

Michael Clifford looked on as a group consisting of two teenagers, a large dog, and a young woman pushing a baby carriage walked by his spot on the beach. He was most attracted to the woman with the stroller, mainly because she looked more of age than the other girl.

The woman had flowing blonde hair the color of strawberries. Some wavy strands flitted in the spring breeze, while the others cascaded down the woman’s neck until they ended just below her slender shoulders. She was perfectly shaped for him – thin but not too skinny, petite, and curvy. Oh, the way she walked! Her gait was lilted, her steps soft and tender as they graced the sand. It reminded Michael of a majestic horse.

Soon after the group passed him, Michael heard a squeal, likely from a fan of his band, 5 Seconds of Summer. “Wait a minute! That’s Michael Clifford!” a teenaged girl shouted, running in Michael’s direction. It was the same teenaged girl he’d seen seconds before, probably the woman’s sister from the looks of it.

“Hello,” Michael said after he stood up to greet her. “What’s your name, love?”

“I’m Emma… Emma Dolan. I’m a huge 5SOS fan!”

“Happy to hear that! Do you have anything for me to autograph? Do you want a hug or a selfie?”

“Follow me!” Emma urged. “You HAVE to meet my sister.”

“Is your sister pushing a baby stroller?” Michael asked her. The instinct that this was the woman’s sister was very strong now.

“Yep! Her name is Cassidy. Come on!”

Before he knew what he was doing, Michael wound up following Emma to where her group was, and there she was again. This time, she and the stroller were facing him, and he could see that there were twin girls in there. The girls were as beautiful as their mother, and that beauty was accentuated by their matching dresses and bows.

“Michael, this is Cassidy,” Emma introduced her sister. “Cassidy, this is Michael! He’s the guitarist of 5 Seconds of Summer!”

Cassidy scoffed. “So, you picked up a random stranger for me to meet?” she asked Emma. “And you know fully well I don’t do guys in bands.”

“Cass, there you go again! You always judge the book by its cover, and it’s very annoying. Give him a chance! Come on, Sean; let’s leave these two to their own devices and have a proper date.”

By the time Cassidy had opened her mouth to argue, Emma and Sean were already gone. She sighed as she looked Michael up and down.

Maybe she was judging a book by its cover; he was actually quite handsome, now that she was thinking about it. Michael was a good eight inches taller than she was, and there were tattoos on his sun-kissed skin. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, just red swim trunks and brown thong sandals, and Cassidy saw a prominent six-pack on his abdomen.

“Well, this is going swimmingly,” Michael commented, breaking the silence. “Your sister and her boyfriend just left us here, all alone.”

“That’s actually just her crush,” Cassidy said. “They’re still in the dating phase. This is actually only their second date.”

“Oh, I see.”

Michael thought long and hard about his next move. Cassidy didn’t seem like the type of girl who would just jump into a relationship, but he couldn’t pinpoint why. Was there an ex? A deceased partner? Something else? There had to be a reason for this.

He looked around for something that would spark some kind of inspiration. He eventually laid eyes on a nearby ice cream stand. Perfect! It would be a nice gesture without seeming like he was asking her out!

“Do you like ice cream?” Michael asked, pointing towards the stand. “There’s an ice cream stand over there.”

Now, it was Cassidy’s turn to think about this. Michael would’ve been absolutely right if he were to assume she wasn’t ready to date yet. Not after what happened last night! But yet, Michael’s offer did seem pretty harmless. Oh, what the heck!

“Yeah, I don’t see why not,” she said.

“Great!” Michael said with a smile. “Do you want to take my hand?”

Cassidy shrugged. This was another one of those harmless moves, at least in her book. “Sure.”

Cassidy and Michael walked hand-in-hand to the ice cream stand, and when they got there, the guy running it recognized Michael right away.

“Whoa, Michael Clifford!” he acknowledged him. “My girlfriend and I are huge fans. What can I get for you?”

“I’ll just have vanilla on a waffle cone. And you, Cassidy? I’m buying.”

“Do they have butter pecan?” Cassidy asked. “You don’t have to buy for both of us, though – I can buy my own.”

“Well, it’s too late for that, I’m afraid. I already paid for two.”

Cassidy sighed. If Michael was trying to avoid coming off as wanting to date her, he wasn’t doing a very good job. Nonetheless, she accepted this, since it was already done.

“Are you new in town?” Michael asked her as they walked back to his spot. “You sound like it.”

“Yeah, I’m from the Little Rock area – Cabot,” Cassidy replied. “Today is my first day here, actually.”

“Oh, nice! What brings you here?”

“I needed somewhere to hide after I left my boyfriend.”

Aha! So, she DID just break up with someone! It was a shame she wasn’t ready to date yet because she was so beautiful. And besides, what guy in his right mind would cause his girlfriend to walk out on him? Oh, well… she’s his loss!

“I’m so sorry you had to leave him. What happened?”

Cassidy shrugged. “None of your business.”

Luckily, Michael took the hint and went silent until they reached his towel.

When they reached Michael’s area and he sat down, Michael offered Cassidy the seat next to him. Another harmless move, right? It’s not like he offered her a spot on top of him or something.

“Sure,” Cassidy said. “How long have y’all been a band?”

“About six years,” Michael replied. “Well, more like five and a half, but it started out as a trio in April 2011. Then, in December that same year, we recruited our drummer.”

“So, let’s see… you have a lead singer, a guitarist, a drummer… and what about the bass player and keyboardist?”

“Yeah, he was in the original trio. It was me, him, and the lead singer. But yeah, we don’t have a keyboardist; we all pitch in for that role.”

Cassidy felt oddly intrigued by this. Suddenly, she wanted to know more about Michael and his band. It wasn’t like she wanted to date him, though… heavens, no! She’d been through enough crap with Nathan to know that all men are trash… right?

Guys, I think I'm going to change the title - Dare You to Love Me. I do have another story on my computer called that, but honestly, I'd just rather concentrate on this one.

Chapter 4

Cassidy, Emma, and Sean didn’t end up leaving until the sun started to set. But when Cassidy found them, they were all over each other like white on rice. They were buck-naked and wrapped in a large towel as they touched each other in a provocative way.

Cassidy’s sixteen-year-old sister was having sex with a guy she barely knew. She’d be damned if Emma ended up pregnant.

“Oh, my God, where’s the eye bleach?!” she exclaimed, shielding her eyes. “Emma, get off that boy right now!”

“But Cass, we were using protection!” Emma tried to defend herself.

Cassidy rolled her eyes. “Right… like there’s a Walgreen’s right here on this beach. Just come on!”

Sean pulled out so Emma could escape, and she and Cassidy took the walk back to Cassidy’s car. However, they were barely off the beach when Michael called Cassidy’s name.

“We forgot to exchange numbers,” he explained when he was within earshot.

Cassidy turned to face him. “Well, what if I don’t want your number?”

“Because you seem like you’re interested in me. Why else?”

“Yeah, well… I’m not. I know I came off that way when we were talking, but I’m just not ready yet!”

Michael was getting frustrated now. Did she want him or not?! He didn’t have to think long about his next move: daring her.

“Actually, you know what? I DARE you to date me.”

Cassidy was unconvinced. She hated dares, and this was no exception.

“I double dare you,” Michael continued. “Actually, no – I triple dog dare you! There’s no backing out of a triple dog dare.”

“No!” Cassidy protested. “I do NOT do dares!”

“Please? At least for a one-night stand?”

After some thought, Cassidy finally decided to cave. “Alright, fine. But it’s just for one night, and don’t count on it becoming a genuine romance.”

“Sweet! So, what’ll it be? Dinner? Movie? Dinner and a movie?”

“Well, I’m very new to this area, so we’ll drive around town for an hour or so. Then, we’ll go to your place for sex.”

“Tonight?”

“Tomorrow night. Pick me up at eight… on the dot.” Cassidy put emphasis on “on the dot”. It wasn’t like she wanted Michael to impress her, but she still greatly disliked being stood up.

Michael nodded. “Duly noted. What’s your address?”

As soon as they got home, Christy asked Cassidy and Emma how the beach was.

“It was fun,” Cassidy reported. “The twins absolutely adore the beach. I haven’t taken them out to the ocean yet, only because I don’t feel comfortable yet.”

“That makes sense,” Christy said.

“And Emma, how was your date with Sean?” Ralph asked.

“Oh, it was great!” Emma gushed. “We took a nice, long walk along the shoreline, and then we had… our first kiss.” Emma had to catch herself before she said “sex”, but she did it just in time.

But Ralph wasn’t buying it. He could tell by the tone of her voice and the slight pause after “we had…” that she was lying.

“Emma, I’ve known you for way too long not to know you’re lying through your teeth,” Ralph said with a stern tone. His voice gets really deep when he’s serious, and that’s how Emma knows she’s about to get in trouble.

“Uh… n-no, I wasn’t! W-we j-just kissed – that’s it!”

“And you’re stuttering,” Christy pointed out. “Spill them, missy! Spill your guts, or you’re automatically grounded!”

“It’s true,” Cassidy said. “They did have sex – I saw it with my own eyes.”

“Cassidy, you stay out of this!” Ralph scolded Cassidy. “We need to hear it from the horse’s mouth.”

Cassidy shook her head in spite of herself with the knowledge that Emma was about to be grounded for a very long time. Then, she excused herself to go upstairs to shower and change into comfy clothes. Whe had just finished slipping into biker shorts and a tank top when Emma knocked on her door.

“Come in!” Cassidy told her.

Emma was in tears when Cassidy opened the door.

“Cass, they’re making me move out!” she blubbered.

“I’m sorry you got such a cruel punishment… but maybe you should’ve thought about that before,” Cassidy said. “Who are they making you move in with?”

“Nana!” Emma’s crying escalated until full-fledged wailing. “I don’t want to move in with her; she’s mean!”

Emma had been given the ultimatum of moving in with Nana Dolan or giving the baby up for adoption if she gets pregnant. She didn’t want to do either, but she felt like Nana Dolan was the lesser of the two evils… although not by much.

“Aw, she’s not mean… she just isn’t the spoiling type like normal grandmas. Come here, sis.”

Cassidy held Emma until she started to drift off. Then, she ushered her into her own room and put her to bed.
