Plot: Cassidy Dolan is fresh out of a toxic relationship, and she totally isn't ready for a new one yet... but when she is dared to date Michael from 5 Seconds of Summer as a publicity stunt, she accepts the challenge. But will it just be that, or will it turn into a genuine romance?
Chapter 1
Cassidy Dolan worked diligently to pack up all her belongings. She was getting ready to leave her boyfriend, Nathan Hays, and she’d gotten up at three in the morning to get started. It was now six, a good hour or so before dawn, and she was running out of time before Nathan would usually rise.
Nathan was never a good boyfriend, at least not after they found out they were expecting their identical twin girls. He would spend his days gaming and his nights partying with the boys, making very little, if any at all, time to be with Cassidy. He has also been incredibly rude and disrespectful, not only to her but to her whole family. In fact, her breaking point was when he started hitting on her seventeen-year-old sister Emma, a girl six years his junior.
The breakup wasn’t exactly the worst, but it wasn’t very pretty, either. Last night, when Cassidy spoke the words, “I’m leaving you,” Nathan went into a tirade about how she was throwing away everything they had. But did she care? Heck no! She just wanted to take the twins and run as far away as possible, even if it meant a cross-country road trip.
Cassidy sighed with relief as she zipped the last suitcase. “Okay,” she said to six-month-old Clara. “Are you ready for your first flight? Go clap, clap, clap!”
Clara clapped and giggled, but Nova, the shyer twin, didn’t do anything. Cassidy would’ve coaxed Nova to do the same, but again, she was in a hurry. Instead, she hauled everything out, put the bags in the trunk of her car and the girls in their car seats, and jumped in the driver’s seat. She gunned the engine, pulled out of the driveway, and sped off towards the airport.
Cabot, Arkansas, is situated about 22 miles northeast of Little Rock, and it’s been Cassidy’s home since she was in diapers. Cassidy would surely miss this place, but it was time to move on from it. She wanted to be closer to her family, anyway, because she was practically the only family member who didn’t move over to the west coast after she graduated high school.
When she called her mom, Christy, to tell her she was coming, Christy answered with a very groggy, “Cass, it’s four in the morning!”
“Well, it’s six in the morning here in Arkansas,” Cassidy countered. “Besides, I’m calling because I finally broke up with Nathan last night.”
“Oh, really? Congratulations! I’ve been waiting for you to do this ever since he started flirting with Emma. Are you coming to live with us?”
“Yeah, I’ll be at the airport by noon at the latest.”
“Perfect! I can’t wait to see you. Give Nova and Clara my love.”
“I will. See you later!”
“Bye, honey.”
Both legs of the flight (from Little Rock to Dallas and from Dallas to Los Angeles) were very exciting for the babies, especially Clara, who would wave at all the passersby. She even got the attention of a sweet old lady who waved back. Nova spent her time watching the clouds go by as the plane passed through them.
Unfortunately, this being their first flight also came with tears. For the first few minutes during takeoff on the flight to Dallas, both twins were crying from fear, but Cassidy was quick to alleviate the situation with pacifiers and sensory toys.
The three of them got into Los Angeles just before noon, as scheduled, and Christy was waiting for them at the gate.
“Cassidy, hi!” she greeted her daughter with a warm hug and a kiss on the cheek. “How was the girls’ first flight?”
“They loved it once we took off,” Cassidy reported. “Clara was waving at everyone, and Nova kept gazing out the window at the clouds passing by. Girls, can you wave to Mimi?”
Cassidy mimicked a waving motion for Clara and Nova, and they repeated her. Christy crouched down and waved back before kissing them both on the forehead.
“How have my little princesses been?” Christy asked Cassidy. “How old are they again?”
“They’re doing well,” Cassidy said, following Christy with the stroller. “I’ve been wanting to do baby-led weaning, but Nathan would never let me.”
“Well, how are they going to learn to love solids if they don’t actually learn?”
“Exactly! What would you suggest for their first meal?”
Christy grabbed their bags from the carousel and led them to her car. “I think they’ll like avocado; that was your first solid food, and you loved it!”
Cassidy laughed. “I guess that explains my love for Mexican food.”
“Yeah, that would be why!”
When they were on the road in Christy’s Toyota Highlander, Christy asked how the breakup went.
“Horrible,” Cassidy admitted. “He got really angry about how I was ‘throwing away’ the relationship, when in reality, it was all because of him.”
“Oh, my goodness! You didn’t fight back, did you?”
Cassidy shrugged. “Well, I had to. I mean, I didn’t physically hurt him, but I did tell him what a deadbeat boyfriend he’d been ever since I was pregnant.”
“It sounds like he was one of those guys who was only looking for a sex buddy.”
“No, because he was the best boyfriend I could ever ask for before the girls came along. You could say that he was in it for the sex and not for the commitment that came with it.”
“Yeah, definitely. Well, I told your dad and siblings, and they’re thrilled for you. I never could stand that man.”
“Thanks. I’m glad I did, too. How’s Emma?”
“She’s good. She got her first license last August; she just has to pass another driver’s test to get her official one.”
“Oh, really? What kind of car is she driving?”
“She drives a blue Hyundai Elantra. It’s just her size, too.”
“Oh, cool!”
“Yeah, we’re all really proud of her.” Christy changed the subject. “Do you think you’ll ever start dating again?”
“I don’t know… I only just broke up with Nathan, so I’d need some time to heal.”
“That’s fair enough. I do want you to think about it, though, because you tend to get lonely when a man isn’t with you. Remember all those late-night calls because Nathan was out with the boys?”
“Yeah, I remember. I’ll sleep on it.”
