You know, if you happen to be speaking in modern Greek to someone

Modern Greek has the word εμπάθεια (empatheia). Sounds a lot like the English word empathy, right? Well they do come from the same root word (hence the similarity), but in Greek this word actually means something more akin to malice or ill-will. It may seem like an incredibly opposite meaning to empathy, but the original Ancient Greek word that’s the root to both these words actually meant just passion, without it being specifically positive or negative in meaning. So it’s not as strange as it might first seem that they developed differently.

reminds me of my friend who went to China who wanted to say

一碗水饺多少钱？(how much for a bowl of dumplings)

now for context the words bowl sounds like the word for night and the words for dumplings sound like sleeping

but instead he said

一晚睡觉多少钱? (how much for one night of sleep)

and the waitress gave him a look and we all laughed

Not really, English certainly borrowed from Greek but it’s a fairly small amount. Some of the words English borrowed from Latin are originally Greek, but that’s also a small amount. But since Latin and Greek are related languages there are words not directly borrowed from Greek that also look familiar to English speakers. But overall, most words that exist in English are of a Latin origin, and most words that people actually use on a daily basis are Germanic
